Default Golden Age Ray ("Happy" Terrill) Appreciation Thread

NOTE: This thread is to discuss the character who started at Quality Comics back in 1940, not other, more recent versions. If you're looking to discuss Ray Terrill (as opposed to "Happy"), see a different thread:
Let There Be Light: The Ray (Raymond Terrill) Appreciation
    http://community.comicbookresources....)-Appreciation

The original Ray, reporter "Happy" Terrill, first appeared as a feature in Smash Comics #14 (September 1940) from Quality Comics. Other characters with features in that title at the time were:
    Magno!
    Espionage (Black X)!
    Invisible Hood!
    Clip Chance at Cliffside!
    Wings Wendall!
    Chic Carter!
    Bozo the Robot!

In The Ray's first story, he plans to cover the dangerous launch of a "strato-balloon" as a member of the crew!

However, when things start going wrong during the flight, something strange winds up happening to "Happy"!

I thought I knew the first version, but that was the 1970's one. I never saw this version with no pants, lol!

Actually, the "1970's one" that was part of the original Freedom Fighters was the same character. In his second appearance, Smash Comics #15 (October 1940), the character did have yellow leggings as part of his costume.

But now he doesn't seem to have that crest on the top of his mask?

Okay, so it's a little delayed, but:

The Ray's last appearance back in the Quality comic books was in Smash Comics #40 (cover-dated February 1943). His next appearance (in a reprinted story originally published in Smash Comics #17) would be at DC Comics in a Superman "100-Page Super Spectacular" in 1972.

Then there was The Ray feature from Black Lightning #11 (September-October 1978):

Unfortunately, there never was an issue of Black Lightning #12; it was a victim of the "DC Implosion".

The all-yellow outfit is simple, but it works. It is how I think of the Ray.

At first I did not like the orange and yellow costume, but I quickly grew to like it.
