Gods in MK are tricky. MKX pretty much made it so that Shinnok's weakness was the green energy that the Cages wield. Other than that, he's immortal. Hell, even with that, he's still immortal. Shao Khan, for all his conquering and power is still below an Elder God.

To be honest, I thought the Green shadow energy Johnny and Cassie have gave them a significant power boost far above their usual ability than it is an outright weakness of Shinnok's.

MK has usually gone with the notion that gods in that setting are mostly just very powerful immortal beings...Who can potentially get the stuffing beaten out of them by very powerful mortals. It's iffy as hell since we got examples of Bi-Han beating down the four elemental gods of Earth only to be killed by Scorpion while Liu Kang fought through 4 major events as Champion (so he did beat Shinnok) until he dies in the original timeline because his opponent brought a second man to assist. At the end of the original timeline, Shao Khan was most definitely the victor.

...Gods always felt like a fancy title than anything else.

Yeah. Shao Kahn became emperor vis poisoning Omaha and taking throne. Out Realm getting so big were his planning and ambitions in using pawns correctly and in original time line out fought everyone.


Shinnok In lore needed help from bald sorcerer guy day 1 after falling to claim Nether Realm And despite being a elder guy does very little. Sure on new time line got people on his side and stuff but got his ass handed to him, badly by Raider/Cages.


To kill Shao Kahn they needed the Eldar Gods to stop his rampage outright. Which is more impressive.

Edit: Just remembered why Omaha was outworld Emperor. His ability to resurrect his minions and Shao Kahn conquering for him. Yeaaah. Shao has this.

Well to be fair, before then we had Liu Kang not only beating him in a fight, but ripping his heart out too. So he wasn't this unstaoppable force that beat everyone, just most who fought him. There were those above him, to be certain.

Because Lou Kang is the biggest bad ass “normal” of the bunch. Especially in original time line where he only died in Deadly Alliance due to plot.
