    For me it was Mark Shaw, but specifically from "First Issue Special."

    I honestly think Kirby had a lot of passion for that version of that character, based on the little essay he wrote in the back of the issue, and it sucks how the character got sucked up into convoluted DC lore with the Guardians and all that stuff not much later.

    Golden Age costumed Paul Kirk, in the reprints of the Simon/Kirby stories that appeared as backups in the original New Gods series. I believe issue 6 had the first reprint

    Actually, it was issue #4 that had the cover price raised from 15¢ to 25¢ and started the addition of the Golden Age Simon & Kirby reprints.

    I had to check the GCD (Grand Comics Database / comics.org) to confirm that info, since I didn't start regularly buying DC comic books myself until about a year later (when cover prices were 20¢ and they had dropped the extra pages of reprints).
