Has nobody mentioned Men in Black yet? Those were some really fun movies.
The comic doesn't stop at the destruction of neo tokyo and there is many story elements who are somewhat different even in the first part indeed.
The movie covers just a part of the manga, honestly it was of course impossible to cover all, and it does so in its own way.
That being all said, and in my very personal opinion, Akira does better as a movie than a manga.
