    There aren't really that many anime films well-known in the U.S. that are based on manga. Akira, Nausicaa, Ghost in the Shell, Oldboy, maybe a couple others.

    Oldboy anime...or are you referring to the live action versions?

    The comic doesn't stop at the destruction of neo tokyo and there is many story elements who are somewhat different even in the first part indeed.

    The movie covers just a part of the manga, honestly it was of course impossible to cover all, and it does so in its own way.

    That being all said, and in my very personal opinion, Akira does better as a movie than a manga.
