Apparently what forced the Raiders hand was the Aaron Donald contract as Mack was unwilling to take anything less than him

According to NFL.Com , the Raiders are a team in midst of a melt down. Ownership and the GM wanted to keep Mack and pay him what he wanted. Meanwhile Gruden however disagreed and pushed the trade. Its said McKenzie (the GM) lost in this power match . Its how long before he decides to resign ?

Gruden's hire is going to end up being an absolute disaster. Two first rounders is a good draw but Gruden can't draft. So what the haul will end up being parlayed as has every chance of being incredibly underwhelming. Hell as an analyst he went on about how he wanted the Raiders to take Manziel over Mack. And now he has a rep in the locker room of coming in, immediately disrespecting their best player to assert his power, and trading him away.

True, draft picks are only a good return if you can actually do something with them.

    Coach Gruden
Captain, in Order to build a better world, sometimes means tearing the old one down... And that makes enemies.

Word is the Mack contract extension was for six years, $141 million with $90 million guaranteed.

They also cut WR Martavius Bryant.

Gruden's reign of terror has officially begun. And remember, they signed him to a 10 year contract. A DECADE. Like, if this thing goes south in a hurry, and Mark Davis wants to fire him even after a couple years... they're eating a LOT of money.

Yhe10 year contract was stupid. Especially for an owner who has very little cash flow as it is

Thus far the moves have been mind boggling crazy.

    - Makes a big trade for malcontent and off field trouble maker Bryant and sends a 3rd round pick there. Then after a preseason where he barely sees the field and complain how he's not picking up the play book of his new offense quick enough ....cut him. Also get worried he may get a 2nd suspension from the NFL which helps lead into cutting him.

    - Make a trade for Ryan Switzer (WR/KR) and then barely let him get time in preseason and then trade him to the Steelers.

    - Bring in Christian Hackenberg for like a month , decide he's not gonna be able to be fixed as a QB and move on. (This was all Jon Gruden who raved about Hackenberg and felt he could fix him...then realized he couldn't)

    - Make a statement weeks ago that you don't feel that the Raiders have a backup QB to Derek Carr (All Gruden) , watch as that shatters the confidence of your backups in preseason in EJ Manuel and Conner Cook who then struggle ! Trade a 5th round pick to Buffalo to acquire AJ McCarron today to be the backup QB and cut both Cook n Manuel.

    - Trade Mack over his contract after not talking to him since February .

Oakland had a chance to reverse its fortunes after getting young stars like Carr, Mack, and Cooper.

They're already letting Gruden trade away 1/3 of that, so the defensive cupboard is bare, and now he's leveraging draft picks into taking peeks at players at QB and WR for a few weeks and then cutting them... which is pissing away the team's future while not fixing their offense. And on QBs... that's Gruden's derangement. He's never satisfied with a signal-caller, and will keep playing musical chairs to try to develop a new guy... which as a HC he never did in Tampa Bay. Just one failure after another.

In Oakland, he's already pushed out three backup QBs, and is on his fourth. And that's after one preseason with the Raiders. Just...

It's back to the dark days, Raider Nation. I am so sorry.

Gruden got awful lucky with Rich Gannon the 1 or 2 magical seasons in Oakland. But he almost never got him had KC not decided to go with Elvis Grbac instead the next season. Unless the Raiders win BIG and go to Super Bowls ...then this $100 million dollar contract they handed Jon Gruden is a joke.

    My head is still spinning.
Chucky might have just made the one of the worse trade ever in professional sports.

To be fair, Gruden did help take Gannon's game to the next level. He finally broke out at the age of 34, and had four remarkable seasons. Including two first team All Pros and an MVP. I don't think Gruden was a fraud with the Raiders. He really did help turn that entire franchise around after it had been limping in the 1990's. But now, the game may have passed him by. He's been away for 15 years.
