    spoilers:
Yep, Kate brought the disease to the island. Not too hard to guess even when it was first brought up in issue #7. What's interesting, though, is that Safiyah knew the whole time, yet was willing to scapegoat and eliminate Maksim all the same. That sort of thing was already seen a little bit back in #5, when Safiyah killed Sixth.

Speaking of issue #5, this cleared up a continuity discrepancy from that issue that's a bit much to get into right now, but I liked that it cleared it up. And one scene recontextualized something from issue #4: In that issue, Batwoman and Knife's final fight ended with Kate creating sparks into an oil slick and using her "I was forged by fire" line. Cool, but that's kind of all it was until now. Now we know that Kate was recreating the lighthouse fight from this issue and basically trolling Knife, which is pretty kickass.

This issue also almost confirms my suspicion that, in-universe, Kate buried her Lost Year experiences incredibly deep in her psyche, which explains why it's never come up even though she's been through more than a few things that should have dredged it to the surface. It explains why she didn't recognize Knife in issue #1 despite Knife looking the exact same here. If that turns out to be true, it's pretty messed up. Interesting, but messed up.
    end of spoilers

Looking forward to what's up with Beth. I think TMAoD have caused her to relapse, but we'll see. And as a minor complaint, I'm getting really annoyed with artists forgetting Kate's tattoos.

Good GOD, this might be the worst thing I've read this week.

I had hope during the last issue due that I thought that Kate Perkins was going to become the new writer and she started solidly enough with a dense chapter that barely touched the dull beginning of this book but sadly that wasn't meant to be and Bennett came back with, guess what? YET ANOTHER FLASHBACK TO ONE OF THE MOST BORING ISLANDS IN EXISTENCE! At this point is not even surprising, is predictable and depressing.

Worst of all, the story makes no sense whatsover. Kate brought a virus to the island and her girlfriend tries to cover it... by blaming other people and killing them and that's the reason why Kate escaped. Let alone the fact that there wasn't any need to even protect Kate from anything since most people around the island probably didn't even know where the disease come from, why even going to such extremes of blaming, judging and executing others? This is contrivedly idiotic.

Godblewski's art was good though but he truly deserves a better script and Kate truly deserves better as a whole. This book is toxic and tedious at this point and needs to end.

No, Safiyah scapegoated Maksim because Kate's presence on the island was causing many of the warlords to question her leadership ability. Killing Maksim served three purposes:
    1. Reassert her authority and demonstrate she hadn't grown soft
    2. Protect Kate from suspicion
    3. Remove a troublemaker

So... it was actually pretty clever.

...no, not really. It's pretty straightforward.
