Default The hidden hand behind the heroes of the Marvel Universe

Does anyone remember the name of an old Marvel miniseries that insinuated that a hidden 'Illuminati' type group was behind the origins of the heroes of the MU? Thanks fo any assistance!

Not that series--the one I'm looking for was far more sinister. I recall a reporter being killed for trying to reveal what he'd discovered. The series had little things like Peter Parker's entire origin being a staged event (without Peter's knowledge).

There was a 2 issue mini called Conspiracy by Dan Abnett and Igor Kordey. Is that it?

Cool. It's in the Marvels Companion collection from a few years ago if you're trying to track it down.

Appreciate the info...I'd totally forgotten it existed, but always wanted to read the entire thing. I'd only come across the second issue.

Speaking of Spider-Man's origin not being quite an accident, I'm guessing Conspiracy might have inspired Mark Millar's revelation in his Marvel Knights Spider-Man run that there was a secret conspiracy headed by corrupt industrialists and politicians/government officials to create supervillains that would keep the then-nascent superhero population distracted from applying their powers and abilities against the more systematic corruption and criminality practiced and enabled by said industrialists, politicians, and government officials, much less using said powers and abilities to advance society in ways that would improve the human condition.

At one time there was a character, a cosmic being, named Origin, who was responsible for the origins of superheroes on Earth (among other things having to do with the stories in Marvel Comics). For a while it lived on Earth in the form of an old lady named Phyllis Twombly.

The character was created by my old friend Mark Gruenwald, who died far too early. (RIP.) Probably why I remember it/her.
