Saving the world is serious business, and when it means jumping into action for a fight (as it usually does), a grimace is appropriate. Or at least a serious look. The same reason action heroes, pulp heroes, and portrayals of classic heroes are usually depicted without a smile.

It is nice to have something cute once in a while though, even if it is the alternative cover.

Watch a dramatic television show and count how many times anyone grimaces. It rarely happens.

This has become an overused cliche.

I'm not saying they need to smile. Just don't grimace all the time.

In the Nineties, DC went through a phase where quite a few characters were shown on covers with a trickle of blood running from one corner of their mouths. These tropes come and go.

Two, maybe three. And one of those characters looks incapable of any other expression.

It was terrible in the 90s, but I can't honestly say I've noticed a lot of grimacing in recent years.

I've just looked through the last 20 TPBs I've bought, and two of them have grimaces - though admittedly, one of them has four grimaces.

I don't think that's too bad.
