Default Death and Return of Superman movie will be set in the New 52

    Attachment 62493

With this in mind, chances are this will be the animated universe's version of a Superman Reborn. Reasonable to expect at least some of this:

    1) When Superman is physically reborn he'll likely be in the classic suit (with cuff addition)

    2) If this is a more faithful adaptation of the OG story, then seems reasonable to expect Lois and Clark together by the end of this.

    3) Updated looks for Steel, Superboy, and Eradicator.

Adding in this story to their New 52 inspired universe and saying that it'll be a more faithful adaptation of the comic seems odd if the intent isn't to actively change their Superman going forward. One would assume they'd just do a movie separate from all of their New 52 inspired stuff if the only goal was to do the story.

This has me excited, because it's how I wanted DC to handle new 52 superman. Have the character get more wise and back into the classic character as he grows up, I get why it had to be done how it is in the comics, but it'll be cool if it's done like that in the movies.

I wonder if they'll just ignore Wonder Woman in this, or give a reason for them breaking up.

In theory I'm super down for this. Still dislike the art style, but it's not the worst.

I couldn't tell ya. Whatever they pick, I'm sure it won't make everyone everywhere who's keeping up with that stuff happy. I'm just guess the Lois relationship will start at the end of Return.

I think the S/WW couple may have to be broken up as swiftly as possible for the Lois stuff to have any real emotion to in it's iconic moments, to this end I suspect they'll go with the "we were just easy together" excuse used in Rebirth. It's short and to the point.

This seems really goofy. Why be beholden to any form of continuity in animated movies? They're about an hour and a half of story. So just tell the story you want to tell, regardless of where it fits. Why not just adapt it with the staunchly post-Crisis setting that it was originally told in?

Ugh, I really wish DC would just drop this animated universe. The movies themselves have gone seriously downhill every since the New 52-ized everything. Before FP Paradox, the movies were all great. After, not so much.

Seems they're pretty hellbent on making a real animated cinematic universe similar to their old TV one. All their other stuff seems to be relegated to the Elseworld imprint like that new Gotham by Gaslight movie. The shared universe bug real.

I agree. Sucks for Conner though. But maybe they're thinking that since this is filtered through their version of the New 52 and Conner will be represented in the Young Justice TV show regularly, this would be cool.

Plus, that easy animated Super Sons money is tempting as hell I imagine.

I still feel a little wary of just outright labelling the current animated continuity "the New 52 animated movies" given more and more they've just been picking and choosing from different continuities instead of being straight-up New 52 adaptions.

Even the upcoming Suicide Squad movie has some New 52 designs (particularly for Waller) but will also see a lot of Post-Crisis characters, classic Dr. Fate, the Crystal Frost version of Killer Frost, and a more Post-Crisis Bronze Tiger. So it's not just the New 52.

I imagine a lot of the initial movie will be spent on developing this version of Superman, providing some resolution to his relationship with Wonder Woman while re-emphasizing Lois's role in his life, and setting up the other Supermen before the fight with Doomsday (which will probably feature Jason O'Mara's Batman and Rosario Dawson's Wonder Woman).

I'm curious if Jerry O'Connel will still be Superman in this, as well as Juliet Landau as Lois and Steve Blum as Luthor (if he's in it).

I am kind of curious if they'll go with a straight-up version of Kon or try some mix of him and Jon, though I hope we get the former.

And I agree with Superlad that I'm curious if Kara will be in this in some form.

I assume because they want to develop this universe's Superman and his world, which they've only really touched on briefly in past movies, and it also allows them to introduce and develop more characters in this continuity like the other Supermen.

It's probably the same reason they adapted the Judas Contract with this continuity's version of the Titans instead of just doing a straight-up Wolfman/Perez adaption like they planned on early into the line.

And John Henry Irons made a cameo in Thrones of Atlantis so arguably this film was foreshadowed as early as 2015 .

This makes no sense to me to forcing this story in new 52. If death of Superman is so iconic and they want to be really faithful, then why are they forcing something that never happened in new 52 and makes no narrative sense for the verse. New 52 has no parents, his cape is indestructible, he wears armor and his love interest is not Lois. The death of story has iconic imagery with the yellow S symbol on tattered cape, his uniform torn, his parents grieving, him and Lois engaged etc. Why should people care for this in the new 52 set up? It's like they mandated this because the DCEU did it too. And both cases kind of just there with no build up . Who wants to see Superman battle Doomsday a third time in the same way? Because they're saying it's the same as the comic by Jurgens. It's like DC can do nothing new with Superman but kill him. Funny how Batman gets his stories told . No wishy washy dilution. If the intention is to bring SM back to his trunks and Rebirth status this is messy and unnecessary. And most SM animated have been lackluster. Because they are not tackling new material. Where is Red Son? That should be done . But no instead they do this again after DCEU Death and JL flopped. Very strange decision.

Yeah I totally agree Knight. I don't get the appeal of this. Actually since Killing Joke and Batman and Harley Quinn...and that Batman '66 animated, I had no idea they were still doing any kind of "Animated continuity". And for Christ's sake they already made Doomsday. If the point is to make it more "true to the source material"...well it's kind of hard to do that in a setting that was clearly never intended for this story.

I think personally, that this has probably been in production for awhile, and they were just using the mandated at the time N52 look. Kinda like what happened with Superman Unbound.

    Yes, please! And thank you!

DC hates the JLI characters, so that might be a big part of it, but their role would actually be pretty easy to omit. Considering 90% of the units sold are going to be to hardcore nerds already very familiar with the source material, why won't they give us a page by page adaptation?? I for one, would love that...

The Superboy of the Reign of the Supermen/Return of Superman adaptation will be Jon Kent, clone of Superman and Lois Lane. Super Sons animated movie coming in 2020.

Wow. You might possibly be joking, but given that the New 52 Superboy is in fact a clone of Superman and Lois' son, this is 100000% possible. All they'd need to do is shorten it and say he's a clone of Lois and Clark.

In fact, I feel the need to bring this up. Yes, it's an official game by WB and DC. Take note of the transformation he does near the end.

Argh....clones are copies of people! Not biological children of people!

(Unless you clone an actual son or daughter of somebody.)
