Yesterday, @kellysued shared on her own Insta the script and final color for Pages 4-5 of #WWHistoria, our upcoming #BlackLabel graphic novel from @dccomics about the history of #WonderWoman’s people, #TheAmazons, and her mother, the Amazon #queen #Hippolyta.
It was a perfect example of process and I wanted to share here, with one more image — the original line work, so folks can see the importance of color, too — in this case the incredible painting work of @evergreenfajardo.
I initially resisted taking this gig (years ago now), but Kelly Sue sold me on it — and while it’s been a longer journey than any one expected (for a range of reasons, from depression to Covid to just wanting to get it all “right”), it may be one of the best creative choices I’ve ever made.
It is hard to explain how sublime Kelly Sue’s writing is, and how perfect her approach is for me; I hope people take in her script because it is #everything. Kelly Sue is a master of craft, a master of rhythm and pace and emotional tenor, and more than anything, a master at evoking character through suggestion and evocation of imagery, of sensation, and tone. “Hera doesn’t flow. She CONFRONTS.” With these words, I knew *exactly* who our Hera was and needed to be visually. Kelly Sue gave me everything I needed right there. Her work is worth study by peers and new writers, and worth every penny we invest in it. I have learned so much from KS about so many things.
One thing that’s taken me so long on this project is that I wanted every panel of every page to match the excellence of the script that inspired it — and I think I succeeded, sometimes.
I brought a lot to this project but every line and design exists only because of Kelly Sue and her work.
As you may have heard, #WWHistoria has been delayed a month — our colorists need more time to work (I’ve given them a LOT to color) and there’s an enormous pandemic-related paper shortage hitting our biz, who knew? — but I really am excited for you to see this work, and for all of you to discover just how special Ms. Kelly Sue is — if you didn’t know this already.
