Default Was Jack Monroe the ORIGINAL Scourge?

Interesting article that puts together a few clues...I'm thinking Jack might've always been Scourge, right from the start (at the very least he was the most driven and active, given that there were others). I read the Captain America arc and many of the issues leading up to it and never noticed the little hints.

    I'd certainly buy that theory.

It's always disappointing when they hide someone's identity and make it a mystery but it ends up not being anyone actually known to the readers. Loved the Scourge storyline back in the day and I was always disappointed it didn't have a better pay off. Jack definitely would have been a cool reveal.

Jack Monroe as the original Scourge is fanfic bunkum.

Originally, Scourge was an editorial tool for removing c and d-grade3 characters from Marvel's roster of villains. Gruenwald gave the character a paper-thin origin, right before killing him off. The origin did not even work entirely with what was shown furing Scourge's various appearances. (One appearance all but established a female Scourge. Gruenwald assumed that the female Scourge was a very convincing disguise.)

But, comics (and Gruenwald) cannot leave well enough alone, and there was never a scab that could not be picked.

Through various contrary (and back-written) reveals), Scourge was revealed to be a conspiracy that was alternatively started by or co-opted by the Red Skull and/or a Golden Age hero. The above-mentioned female Scourge (the result of an artist mistake) was back-written as a new character.

The Scourge shown in "Captain America #319 was meant to be the only Scourge. He was the sibling of a z-grade villain who took up vigilantism to redeem the family name of some-such. After Gruenwald's exercise in scab-picking, the Scourge conspiracy was the brain-child of a Golden Age hero (the Angel) who wanted to take a more aggressive stance against crime. There was also a Scourge program operated by the Red Skull and another by the Feds.

It is all really stupid, and Marvel needs to leave it alone.
