Default Which Shazam run by Johns do you recommend?

I've never really read any "solo" Captain Marvel/Shazam series, but I think it's time I take the plunge. I'm interested in reading a newer run, so I figure I'd either go with the Johns' New 52 run or start reading the current (postponed?) Johns's run ("The Seven Magic Lands", I think it's called).

If I were to only read one, which one would you recommend and why?

Definitely read the first, (vol. 1) Geoff Johns - Garry Frank
It's stand alone, yet it sets up for the next.
And is a great intro to the new take on the character (and Family).
Both story (Johns) and wonderful art by Gary Frank who re-visualizes the characters.
Was also somewhat the basis for the film.
    Great, fun read.

Even better if you don't have any expectations from the original take, as it's a bit of a reinvention.
Although I was always a fan of the original, and still really enjoyed it, so either way.

Very cool that it sets it up for the next - did not realize there wasn't any rebirthiness going on with this one. I'll definitely start with the New 52 Johns run, then!

I’d also recommend picking up Jerry Ordway’s run if you get a chance to do that.

The New52 Shazam! is not a run. It's only backup stories in Justice League that tells Shazam! new origins. It's like a prequel to its current run. And it's the story that inspired the movie.

Yeah, no pre-Flashpoint Captain Marvel continuity has been restored at all, unlike a lot of other characters. Shazam is purely the New 52 version.

Definitely start with the New52 Johns-Frank trade. It's the direct precursor to the current title and sets everything up. Then, if that grabs you, get the current ongoing; it shouldn't be hard to catch up, the book is hit with delays quite often.

Thank you everyone for your recommendations... I should have more than enough Shazam material to pursue now!

After you get caught up/finished with the Johns stuff (I wish there more!), definitely go back and read some of the previous runs, as recommended here.

The Ordway run, as already mentioned, is a gem.

    To the utmost, I agree.

And if it's still available, definitely get both versions of the graphic novel:
