I sometimes thought he was going to end up being some lesser New God from Apokolips (kind of a G Gordon Godfrey-lite) who was going to, y'know, bring Superman to Darkseid somehow... (or just 'break him') and prove his worth.

Yeah case in point, how people talk about Superman #75 by itself when it's really a chapter of the story built by the whole group. I think Jurgens certainly pulled his weight but that era wasn't a one man show at all, as things often seem to be these days.

Exactly. That group built that whole world together. It's the complete opposite of the "big personality era" that were still kinda in - like a big newsroom in some ways, which seems fitting for the character. It'd take a very special group of folks to be able to really pull that off again, but I think the books would be stronger for it.
