I forgot to thank you for voting for my cover, Tami! I thought doing a little cheesecake would stir up more votes but it didn't work this time

If Egg Fu is not Wondy's most bizarre villain, he's definitely on the short list. The weird thing looking back at that era was that I was never fazed by it. I could watch Vito Scotti doing the stereotypical buck-tooth "Jap" on Gilligan's Island without blinking as a kid, yet I cringe when I see stuff like that today. The vagaries of time...
Even worse, there is Breakfast at Tiffany's where Mickey Rooney plays a Japanese landlord that make you wonder how that went over back then!

When I was a teen I got into this phase of reading paperback editions of Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu series. I always did like a good villain but it never struck me until reading up on it later how this is part of the "Yellow Peril" xenophobia that was prevalent at the time they were written.

If I had remembered it, that cover might have been one I would have posted. The symbolism and artwork always struck me as impressive.

I think it is one of Frank Cho's memorable covers for Marvel. I had forgotten about it until I was looking for covers with eggs and this came up.

By the time I saw that movie, I was an adult and my thinking had changed a lot. Even as a teen watching Jerry Lewis as a Japanese chef in Hardly Working at the local theater made me pause.

I still like Fu Manchu because he's such a great villain, but you're right about the "inscrutable Chinaman" fear that was abundant in the fiction of that era.

And congratulations to The Darknight Detective for a cover which as he put it a cover which was "obviously racist, offensive, and very fun". We have dealt with a hobby which seems inconsequential yet in so many ways is symbolic of the issues most dealing with those affecting all of us. It is amazing that we can deal with work that was in many ways offensive and still appreciate the parts of it that weren't a problem. And really, there were so many problems with Egg Fu.

It's time for that part of our week when the captain notes something he's actually learned. And what have I learned this week? The joke must be big and not obvious. I go through the "Easter Egg" joke and not even a "oh, that's cute". But honestly. doess nay joke have the intensity to survive next to Egg Fu? No, they really don't. I look forward the TDD's contest idea this week and once again offer my heartfelt congratulations for his choice. Awesome work.

Congrats DD! I admit to not considering the Egg Fu Yung cover because it offended me.

Hollywood has changed a lot (consider the Black Panther movie), but in some ways its just lip service.

Yes, things were different then. Marlon Brando always said that one of his favorite roles was that of the Okinawan "Sakini" in The Teahouse of the August Moon (1956). I doubt that any studio would risk that now.
