Your Fun Real-Life "Superman" Fan Moments And/Or Things.

So, in the process of soundly ignoring homework I should've finished last week, I've decided that we spend far too much time debating and arguing different things about the canon of Superman, and I thought maybe we needed a thread where we could kick back and share some of the moments in our lives that were touched, in whatever way, by the influence of this character we all love.

It can be anything. If you pulled a stranger out of a fire because you thought "What would Superman do?" go right ahead and brag about that sh*t, you deserve to! If you gave a homeless person your last twenty dollar bill, you bask in the glory of your selfless charity! If you listen to the John Williams score every day at the gym, and that gave you the inspiration to keep going, we wanna hear. If you have the cape Dean Cain's stunt double wore, and it is hung proudly in your living room, share a photo! Whatever!

Nothing is too minor, too silly. Humble-brags are welcome. Just share a highlight from your life that connects, in some way, to Superman.

I have two to share, real quick, just to get us going (if anyone is interested in the first place and this thread isn't just my over-taxed mind being dumb).

As a wedding gift, my wife gave me a Superman collector's card autographed by Chris Reeves, from a set that came out with the first movie. It belonged to her father. It's a very touching gift for a couple reasons; her father was a well respected member of law enforcement, known all across my State, and the guy has high standards for his youngest daughter. He also has five kids (including my wife), so the fact that this card ended up in my possession always seemed a sign of approval (which is cool, even though I've never sought it). Secondly, beyond Superman I'm just a huge fan of Reeves himself; the guy was simply amazing, and what he did for stem cell research was a feat worthy of Superman. So having his autograph at all, on anything, is pretty cool.

My second thing is; I had a chance to sleep with my very own "Lois Lane".....and turned it down because of Superman. I was waiting tables at this tourist town restaurant, and one of my tables was this really attractive brunette who was so involved in her laptop and phone she barely paid enough attention to order food, and was actually kinda rude. Later in my shift she came back, without the computer, ordered a drink and we started talking. Her name wasn't Lois, but she was a reporter out of New York working on a story. She "needed" a place to stay the night and gave me her number for when I got outta work.....and I never called, because I had just started dating the woman who would eventually become my wife. Because that's what Superman would do. But sh*t, it was tempting.

This actually is a great thread idea! Fans can have Superman slip into our lives. Sometimes without noticing.

And both your stories are great. You have an actual autograph of Chris Reeve! That is just fantastic. And the second story is awesome. Resisting this temptation as Superman would not do the same. That is some great reading of Superman done by you.

Being somewhat new to Superman, i don't have much to share. There's more, but i will start with this. Superman's music is definitely useful. Both Williams and Zimmer are used as alarm tones to rise early in the morning. I have also used them as alarm tones while doing breathing exercises, 'pranayam'. They are needed to track time of 5,5,10 minute intervals. In this way i precisely do as much as i want to. These exercises are boring. I won't do them an extra minute. I have used Superman music or podcasts to exercise. Morning walks are better experiences when i mix them up with news and youtube channels. And my recent trousers, the ones i wear at home are black with the Superman symbol. Think of Death of Superman black costume, but only trousers with an 'S' on the left thigh.

Part of the reason I majored in journalism in college is honestly because in high school I started really getting into comics, especially Superman, and reading about Clark/Lois made me want to have a career in that field even more. Obviously this was just a small reason for why I decided to major in that field, but looking back, I could see me getting into comics around the same time I chose my major subconsciously helping me decide.

Superman is not the hero that inspires me personally. But without him, superheroes as we know them today probably wouldn't exist. And its because of the hero instinct instilled in me by them (as well as Power Rangers) that I ended up fighting a lot in Middle School and High School, leaping in anytime I saw someone getting bullied.

Also, I was Beppo the Super Monkey for Halloween one year when I was a toddler.

Then, later, he did the movie "Somewhere in Time" which was filmed on Mackinac Island. During days off of the filming, he would drive to different small towns in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, park, take his bicycle out of the trunk and do a bike tour of the town.

So, she was out in her front yard. This guy bikes by, smiles and waves at her, she smiles and waves back, and he keeps going. She thinks, "Wow, that guy really looked a lot like Christopher Reeve."

Now, while they were filming on Mackinac Island, it was kept secret from the general public. But later, when the news got out, she suddenly realized, "Oh, wow, that WAS Christopher Reeve and he smiled at me and waved at me."

So I dated someone who sort of met Christopher Reeve. LOL.

Good enough for Kevin Bacon, good enough for us! Nice story. It's funny how you can run into a celebrity you *should* recognize, but when they're out in the world like a "regular" person you don't really make the connection, it's just "someone who looks like a famous person."

I'm glad someone likes the idea! lol I wasn't sure if this would be too......I dunno, fanboy-ish or sappy, but I thought a nice thread where everyone could talk about how the character has impacted their lives might be fun.

And both your stories are great. You have an actual autograph of Chris Reeve! That is just fantastic.

I actually have two. Many years ago my mother bought me a 8x10 photo of Reeves in his Superman costume which was also autographed. But I'm not convinced of how legit the signature is (she ordered it online and I dunno how reputable the source was), so I didn't mention it earlier.

That soap opera was LOVE OF LIFE. My mother watched it religiously—she even had a little ritual where she would make a pot of tea and sip her tea as she watched the show. This was always her special time in the day to pause from the house work and have time for herself.

When I was little, pre school, she would send me outside to play, so I wouldn’t bother her. But as I grew up, I got to know the characters and the stories. In the summers and on holidays, I’d often watch LOL, so I well knew Christopher Reeve, as Benny, from that show.

I like the Alvin Schwartz novel/memoir, AN UNLIKELY PROPHET, where he makes a case for Superman being real and involved in our lives. Someone should have done a movie adaptation of that.

I have had some crazy experiences over the years. Here are a few (but they're not fun (there have been fun ones but I can't think of them right now), so if you want me to remove them I will):

- there was a heavily pregnant woman sitting on the bus stop bench (I was waiting for the bus (on my way to a job interview, pre-mobile phone)) and her waters broke and I ended up accompanying her to the hospital... and the delivery room... and the delivery (for a while I was convinced my fingers were broken)). She gave birth to a healthy baby girl;

- was in a comic book store just before closing. A couple of guys came in - they stole some money and a couple of books... and stabbed the guy behind the counter and left. Blood everywhere, I attended to him while waiting for the emergency services to arrive. Had many strange looks on my way home that night - I didn't realise I was covered in blood until I got home and my Mum saw me

- a postal van clipped the wheel of a bike and pulled it under (the bike owner was not riding at the time, he was standing next to me and the bike was next to him). I somehow jumped over the bike (it all happened so fast) but he got pulled under and his leg snapped, with the bone tearing through the muscle and ripping his leg round. I wrapped his leg with my jacket and pulled tight. Luckily, an ambulance was at the petrol station and they were immediately on site...

Good enough for Kevin Bacon, good enough for us! Nice story. It's funny how you can run into a celebrity you *should* recognize, but when they're out in the world like a "regular" person you don't really make the connection, it's just "someone who looks like a famous person."

I forgot to mention he was apparently wearing sunglasses. I guess that wearing glasses stuff sort of works.

Also, this was a small town called Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, population 12000 or so, about as far from Hollywood as you could get in the States, so not a place you'd expect to really see a movie star. Well, actually, nowadays, you would because of the Native American casinos, all kinds of celebrities are there in the summer, brought in to do shows, though rarely seen about town. But in the late 1970s, no.

That's cool. Are you still in journalism? I've always been interested in the field but never really considered a career there.

Journalism is still major, but my concentration is public relations and that's what I actually will be doing when I graduate in a few weeks.

Yep. And it also lets us read some great stuff about others. While we get into debates and arguments we can know each other a bit more. Know something good about others. I have heard somewhere that if we feel joy on hearing the good qualities of others, some of those qualities get inside us. Can't tell the source. So, i don't know if its legit. But anyway a Superman thread for Superman fans is a solid idea.
