My guess is Arthur and Mera are searching for artifacts of Atlan that were lost when Atlantis sank, so they have to go on this globe trotting quest over land to find them.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what's going on.

I hope it's something better than a McGuffin chase, there's two villains and Atlantis to explore which I hope get the screen time rather than a plot device.

That's stupid the two movies don't seem to have a lot in common to me.....

I haven't read the Johns new 52 run nor have I seen the movie BLACK PANTHER, but I know enough about both Aquaman and BP to understand that they're very different characters and this Aquaman movie (and I gather the Johns comic) is taking a lot from the '60s and '70s runs that established Mera, Vulko, Orm, Black Manta and the worlds of Atlantis--as well as subsequent creations by Peter David--and all of that is an expansion on the Aquaman character that's been around since 1941, thanks to Mort Weisinger and Paul Norris.
