    Default Favorite Movie By Decade

Simple enough. What is your favorite movie for each decade? You can start with whatever decade you like, but I haven't seen many movies from the 20's or before.

    1930's King Kong (1933)
    1940's The Maltese Falcon (1941)
    1950's Godzilla (1954)
1960's The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (1966)
    1970's Taxi Driver (1976)
    1980's Raging Bull (1980)
    1990's Pulp Fiction (1994)
    2000's The Dark Knight (2008)
    2010's The Avengers (2012)

    Hmm, difficult.

From the 2010's i would say "Your Name". From the 70's A New Hope. From the 90's The Thin Red Line.

From the 80's, Princess Bride i guess.

The rest i don't know, gotta think about it a bit more. Will edit later.

Edit : from the 00's i would say the Lord of the Rings. The first one more specifically, long version, was truly excellent. From the 60's, Fantomas.

    1920's: The Kid (1921)
1930's: The Wizard of Oz (1939)
    1940's: Citizen Kane (1941)
    1950's: Seven Samurai (1954)
    1960's: 2001:A Space Odyssey (1968)
    1970's: The Godfather Part 2 (1974)
1980's: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
    1990's: Andaz Apna Apna (1994)
2000's: No Country For Old Men (2007)
    2010's: Inception (2010)

    Note:
I will keep updating the list. There are lots of films i haven't watched. If i like another film more then ones mentioned here, i will make changes. With time too one's choices change. A year ago i would not have placed No Country For Old Men above Dark Knight or Inglorious Basterds. But here we are. They are my #2 and #3 now.

The easiest choices were 50s and 60s. There are a number of awesome films from that time but i think my favorites are 'awesome among awesomes'. 20s, 30s, 40s were easy too as i have watched very few films from that period. In case of 20s i have watched only 2. From 30s only one. And two from 40s. The Great Dictator (1940) was great. But i don't think it was better then Citizen Kane.

    1930's The Lady Vanishes
    1940's The Maltese Falcon
1950's The Bridge on the River Kwai
    1960's The Ipcress File
    1970's Star Wars
1980's Raiders of the Lost Ark
    1990's Miller's Crossing
    2000's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    2010's

I really need to let the dust settle on this decade before I know which film(s) will stand the test of time.

    1930s It Happened One Night
    1940s Now, Voyager
1950s Cinderella (i've several favourite movies in this decade but Disney takes the cake)
1960s The Manchurian Candidate (too many to choose from but the Dame takes the bullet)
1970s The Godfather (give me justice)
    1980s The Untouchables
    1990s Shawshank Redemption
    2000s Wall-E
2010s Guardians of the Galaxy (nothing will top this for me even though the decade isn't yet over.)

    The Manchurian Candidate
was on my shortlist for the 60's. Excellent film, terrific performances, script, cinematography. I re-watched the Blu-ray only a week or two ago and it never disappoints.

    1930's: King Kong
    1940's: Citizen Kane
1950's: The Ten Commandments (it was a three way toss up with THEM!, my favorite "big bug" movie from the 50's and Godzilla)
    1960's: Goldfinger
1970's: Superman (barely edging out Star Wars: Episode IV and The Godfather)
1980's: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (just squeaking past The Terminator and Raiders of the Lost Ark)
    1990's: Pulp Fiction
    2000's: Iron Man
2010's: Marvel's The Avengers (another toss-up with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy)

I decided to specify a comedy and a drama/action/non-comedy from each decade. This is certainly not my nominations for Best Movies in terms of the filmmaker's art, just the ones I enjoy watching the most.

1920's: Comedy: The Gold Rush. Non-comedy: Metropolis

1930's: Comedy: A Night at the Opera. Non-comedy: The Wizard of Oz

1940's: Comedy: Miracle on 34th Street; Non-comedy: Casablanca

1950's: Comedy: The Quiet Man; Non-comedy: On the Waterfront

1960's: Comedy: The Producers; Non-comedy: In the Heat of the Night

1970's: Comedy: Young Frankenstein; Non-comedy: The Godfather Part II

1980's: Comedy: Caddyshack; Non-comedy: Raiders of the Lost Ark. (Special award: Labyrinth)

1990's: Comedy: The Big Lebowski; Non-comedy: Ed Wood

2000's: Comedy: O Brother, Where Art Thou?; Non-comedy: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

2010's: Comedy: Inside Out; Non-comedy: Mad Max: Fury Road

1950's: The Spirit of St. Louis
1960's: At the time, the Jungle Book, now 2001 A Space Odyssey.
1970's: Star Wars (A New Hope).
    1980's: The Princess Bride
    1990's: Unforgiven
2000's: Lord of the Rings especially the second one
    2010- present: Wonder Woman

Note: in many cases, I'll probably think of some other movie I've overlooked and that I liked better.

Edit: And it's happened already. At the time, Star Wars was my favorite of the 1970's. Now I'd say "Young Frankenstein".
