From an in hindsight hilarious 2014 interview:http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/05/...-female?page=2
Also X-Men fans already hated Guggs in that same period, so what the hell was the X-Office thinking when they gave him the main book and carte blanche to do whatever he wanted: http://community.comicbookresources....hp/t-2270.htmlIGN: Who's been your favorite character to write?
Guggenheim: Hmm... You know, I would say a lot of the story's emotional core comes from Rachel.
Kinda hope Rachel dies at the end of DRS or is at least humbled as fuck while Jean is allowed to be the superior mutant. I mean, Mesmero ain't got shit on Mastermind AND Emma Frost. Rachel's a disrespectful brat smfh. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ No wonder Nate is Jean's favorite.

Probably their biggest concern was finding someone who could make the deadlines.
About the issue it was not bad but it is extremely predictable and not even the action scenes are good which ends up with any motivation to read this .
Even trying to rely on nostalgia does not get the same result as Gambit and Rogue for example.
And as if it were not enough we returned to the extinction plot in a future version of a timeline as if we had never seen it before. If there was a prize for lack of creativity Gold would certainly take it .
If it were not for the constant reminders about Rachel getting stronger then no one could notice this since in every fight against the villains she is almost useless even in this issue. But it will become a threat in the next issues capable of overthrowing an entire X-mens team .
The only positive thing about this issue was Rogue's words to Kitty about her doubts about marriage. Let's be frank with some exceptions no one here is happy or believes that this marriage has any relevance or will work and Guggenheim is aware of this. But despite everything he as a writer which commits himself to the story he wants to tell and in his own way says:
* Damn the universe and the opinion of who is against if she loves Peter and if Peter loves Kitty then they deserve this chance .
As much as not happy with Gold and this marriage, at least recognize Guggenheim for staying true to the story he wanted to tell even though this story becomes something insignificant in the X-mens stories.
Mesmero has hypnotized Jean (Claremont Byrne run) and Rachel (Claremont Excalibur iirc) when they were both Phoenix hosts (according to the retcon of Jean's first resurrection, Mesmero may have hypnotized the Phoenix itself to turn it into a circus girl)
He is a very powerful mutant who has beaten teams singlehandedly on more than one occasion, the problem is he isnt a telepath, he is a hypnotist whose powers work through Eye Contact. You look at him in the eyes, and you are f*cked, at least that is how his powers used to work. He is not a telepath, and characters used to be able to protect themselves from him by covering their eyes.
Guggenheim is turning him into a telepath in this book.
Exactly: he's a hypnotist. This isn't in his wheelhouse. Guggenheim is trying to say he's as strong as a majorly powerful illusionist and an omega level telepath. It's not happening.
Also in general, writers don't seem to want to touch Rachel outside of those who cite her as a favorite and after Guggenheim finishes doing the damage that he's doing no one will want to touch her again.

No on the contrary a bad story will always be bad but as author and writer it is always easier to give fans what they want. If you get burned as you follow your instincts and follow the path you want for the story you created, at least will respect you as a writer even if it does not change my view of the story being bad.
Writers may be criticized for their choices but the moment you give up your own ideas just to satisfy the fans you can not call yourself a writer.
Well, Rachel is powerful and could normally do that stuff bit eyes doing much faster and easier than ever before.
This issue was fricken fantastic! The art great!
Since when did Bobby got blue eyes?
