There may be a correlation there, but I don't see how one causes the other.

The problem is that, if these criticisms are made at all, the handle used to make them is accused of being one of many used by a certain person. It focuses more on the people making the arguments, and less the arguments themselves. Xenon pointed out that this is just a bullying tactic used to attack the critics so they could avoid having to address the issue at hand. If you find out that someone using a handle isn't like those people who are obnoxious and wrong, then that just means they are a new person that you are unfamiliar with, which just brings everything back to square one: What did the person say, and how will you respond to it?

You're right when it's hypocritical when you're allowed to be hidden and praise others, but it doesn't mean the same argument doesn't apply. You should always question the validity of opinions on the internet, good or bad. It's just that most of the time it's easier to find criticism on anything versus praise.
    1) You should always question the validity of everything. Full Stop.
    2) It's easier to criticize because you can point out why something doesn't work. Pointing out why something DOES work is a lot more effort and generally feels unnecessary because...well...it works....

I mean, I think both The Night Gwen Stacy Died and The Death of Jean DeWolff are fantastic stories, but I spend far more time criticizing Sins Past than I do praising those two stories. Partially because the latter I feel is a wrong that needs fixing, but also because there are only so many ways you can say "it made me FEEEL!".

But they don't mind being rude and causing trouble.
I think it's setting to a certain degree, not just distance. The internet is a forum for you to post your thoughts and look at other people's thoughts essentially (ignoring the 90% that's for porn, naturally...though those ARE people's thoughts....). And people have negative thoughts. Out in the real world those forums don't exist nearly as much, I think.

mmmmmm, I'm not so sure about that one.

I think that the type of people who are obnoxious and wrong are not the type to concern themselves with what name they're posting under in general. Some, sure. But I would guess it's not the majority. And if someone IS obnoxious and wrong, they tend to be easily dismissed, so I'm not sure they're even that problematic. SUBTLE and wrong is far more insidious.

Of course, "wrong" in the context of this board is a difficult concept, which is kind of a whole different topic.

    I agree, but...

Everyone gets death threats over everything. I've gotten death threats playing Starcraft online. In 2001. It's never an ok thing to say, but I wish we'd stop pretending like some idiot typing "I gonna killz u" is the equivalent of more credible threats.

And that last part is the central question. In the end, if your argument is solid, it should be solid no matter who says it. There are exceptions, of course, but if we want rational thought to rule the day, we need to focus less on who and more on what.

the idea that praising something for working well is unnecessary doesn't take into account human nature. people and the things we produce tend to need support and validation. if for no other reason than just to simply be aware something is working in order to continue confidently. silence can be ambiguous.

If I say, "Dude, you drew his right arm three times bigger than his left arm!", or, "Why are you writing MJ as if she is a dumb-bell, when she has never been that stupid before?", or "Trenton is the capitol of New Jersey", and you (the comic-book writer) say, "You're anonymous, so nothing you just said is true!", I know I'm talking either to a sixth-grader, or a person who is struggling to avoid engagement. Or a Marvel employee, tasked with batting down criticisms on CBR.

Or you just got an axe to grind. I know it's never the reader's fault, I get that.

But none of that has anything to do with your desire to regard others as if you're living in an episode of Venture Bros.

What makes it worse is MJ when she finally joined the cast was, if not a dumbbell, a very flighty party girl. Which some people look at as dumb. Gerry Conway gave her more depth. Then Wein and Wolfman shat on that. It took Stern to bring MJ back and DeFalco to give her even more depth.

I wouldn't mind seeing a new writer. I like Slott's stuff, but I wouldn't mind some change now.

That doesn't surprise me at all.

It makes sense that Slott was the first choice. He was consistently the guy who handled the biggest stories (ASM 600, The first Brand New Day arc, etc.) and there wasn't an obvious alternative. He was also someone people at Marvel liked working with, and was known to have an absurd amount of Spider-Man related ideas.

Although it is interesting to hear Slott's perspective from interviews: He thought Joe Kelly was going to get it, because of the acclaim of Gauntlet: Rhino, and the way he nailed the landing with the conclusion of the Gauntlet arc with Grim Hunt.

If Slott had been unable to do it, I'm sure they could have found someone else, but it doesn't surprise me that it never came to that.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

The only true professionals are the ones talking about comics on a message board. Everyone else is backing pals.

For a second I thought that website's address was asswacker.tumblr.com.
"I should describe my known nature as tripartite, my interests consisting of three parallel and disassociated groups; a) love of the strange and the fantastic, b) love of abstract truth and scientific logic, c) love of the ancient and the permanent. Sundry combinations of these strains will probably account for my...odd tastes, and eccentricities."
