In reality this gives Feige more toys to play with. If the stories are true that Justice Department will approve the deal in 2 weeks after its approved by Fox shareholders....he's like...oh hell yeah. Cause the faster he gets that , the faster we get to plans for what is Phase IV. Now with Doctor Doom , X-Men , Deadpool , and Fantastic Four.

Exactly. Disney is at it's most powerful it's probably ever been.

I'm not buying into the monopoly gloom and doom. I'll take all Marvel properties under one umbrella for 1000 please.

Disney has enough cash and more to do this deal. Many have said Disney is way , way more able to handle this. They are doing stocks and cash here. Less debt basically.

Except this is the same company that has somehow bungled the Star Wars franchise. Fox sold these assets because these iconic franchises were no longer lucrative, profitable maybe, but not the same gilded calf as they were in the 90's.

No that's not the way corporate debt works, and knowledgeable people are saying this is a significant risk.

Disney hasn't really bungles the Star Wars license beyond Solo coming out too soon and issues it had. Its said they released it too soon. Also here is the films released and box office...

Star Wars VII : The Force Awakens : $2.0+ Billion worldwide box office.

Star Wars VIII : The Last Jedi : $1.3 Billion worldwide box office.

Star Wars : Rogue One : $1.0+ billion worldwide.

Solo didn't do as well. Its not a box office bomb and they will fix the issues with the other films they do. But to say they bungled this is insane given that 3 of the films worldwide has done $4.3 billion .

Almost everyone has pointed out Disney can handle the debt better than what Comcast will. Who are taking massive loans from investment banks to do the deal. Its why folks are thinking Comcast could walk away from the deal now as they are gonna realize...Disney has way more resources than they have.

Murdoch wants to consolidate his media empire and get Sky that was the reason they wanted to dump Fox.

When you take in production cost of Solo with Marketing cost and then how much of the profits the theaters keep it was a bomb and I liked it but it was a bomb if all the stars align going forward it might break even.

These movie also cost money to make though, about 200-250 million, and the theatres take a cut too as we all know. I've read some estimates that, just including the first three films, these movies have made about half the cost of their purchase with just the films alone. Maybe with toys and home media sales you make the difference, but, it is widely known that the new Star Wars toyline has been faltering. Keep in mind too, this purchase has to exceed the cost of inflation too, since they could have just put that cast in the bank or kept the stocks.

Now Disney is in a situation where one of their Star Wars films is, optimistically, a wash that has lead to the cancellation/freezing of future films of that line. Not to mention that episode 9 will likely receive less viewers than The Last Jedi. After 9, we might not get another Star Wars film until 2022 or something.

Here is the thing though...the films have made huge money. I mean if they barely did what Solo has done , you could say uh oh. But here is the budgets for the films production wise.

Star Wars : Force Awakens : $245 million dollar production budget.

Star Wars : Rogue One : $200 million dollar production Budget.

Star Wars : Last Jedi : $200-$250 million dollar production budget.

Now promotional wise we don't know if Disney put $100-200 million into each film but say they did. Also we know that Disney demanded huge money terms for The Last Jedi and got 65% of the theater grosses here domestically. It goes to 70% if theaters do wrong in how they ran the film.

    https://mashable.com/2017/11/01/star.../#JK_HdnkpHOqz

Overseas the amount per percentage varies a lot on what studios get back. A couple years ago a new deal with China raised some percentage figures up for studios. But in the end we really don't know what Disney gets from the figures overseas here.

Toys wise you are right that the Last Jedi's toy sales weren't as good and Hasbro had sales drop 2%. The CEO believes that the same tactic they did for Force Awakens (releasing toy line 3 months early) likely didn't help. That stores got the toys in September and the film didn't open til December. Plus they think the loss of Toys R Us played a part as well.

    http://fortune.com/2018/03/28/hasbro-star-wars-toys/

They plan to start releasing toys closer to when the film arrives now it appears.

Now lets examine home video sales....

Star Wars : Force Awakens : $188,00,000+ million in DVD/Bluray sales.

Star Wars : Rogue One : $82,000,000+ million DVD/Bluray sales.

Star Wars : Last Jedi : $67,000,000+ Million in DVD/Bluray sales.

Now sure things are being slowed down because of the situation with Solo. But really Disney's had issues before and Rogue One was a key problem as the film was completely rewritten on the fly the final act. They fired directors on Solo and was pushing to get it done. Disney likely realized they were over doing the Star Wars market in a way with too many film projects and rushing to get them out.

Rian Johnson plans his 3 film trilogy with characters he's created that will also be done. Disney hasn't stopped that from happening yet. Those are being developed so your gonna see the main films continue and Johnson's film series as well.

Given the money Disney's earned off Star Wars...i doubt they are worried overall. They are gonna slow things down and make sure situations the last 2 spin-off films doesn't happen again.

Also Deadline Hollywood has the final numbers....Star Wars as a whole has been a huge global success for Disney. Here is the article...

    https://deadline.com/2018/03/star-wa...ts-1202351603/

When Bob Iger agreed to pay $4 billion for Lucasfilm, even he probably didn’t imagine that profit from the first three films — Force Awakens, Last Jedi and spinoff Rogue One — would earn back close to 40% of that purchase price, with collective profits just over $1.5 billion. The $417.5M profit on Last Jedi is -46% from Force Awakens $780.1M. Participations and residuals total $98.7M, down from Force Awakens’ $143.5M, which were lofty in part from Harrison Ford’s big payday. Disney is right back at it with Memorial Day weekend’s Solo: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: Episode IX due out on Dec. 20, 2019, with Abrams back in the driver’s seat. The cash on cash return ratio is a healthy 1.72. We can only imagine what the Top 10 will look like if Disney inhales Fox and adds its X-Men and other franchises to the Disney arsenal. Landing four films in the Top 10 is illustrative of Disney’s position as far and away the most dominant major movie studio we have seen in decades.
