Default Spider-Man comics fan's opinions of Spider-Man Homecoming

I liked this movie when I saw it in the theater but re-watching it I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more.

My knowledge of Spider-Man is the Spider-Man Omnibus, of course by Stan and Steve Ditko, and the films. First two with Toby Maguire I think are still a lot of fun, Spider-Man 3 and the Amazing Spider-Man movies not so much. I've also seen a bunch of episodes of the cartoons (90's show and Spiderman and his Amazing Friends) but that was when I was much younger.

What I'm saying is I may not be an expert on the character but I still found Homecoming to be an excellent portrayal of Peter Parker and definitely not your typical super hero movie which was very refreshing. He screws up a lot and has no idea what he's doing for 90% of the movie but when push comes to shove he turns into this amazing hero and I think it really is more effective than any other super hero movie in that regard. Usually they get the powers, fight some thugs and it feels like they've been doing it for years before the villain pops up.

What did the hardcore fans think compared to a casual fan? I know with some characters people love so much no one will be the perfect choice of actor for them but did Tom Holland do a good job to you? Did the movie deliver?

I like the movie but the major complaints against it is that his suit is from Tony Stark. He feels like Kid iron man. Apparently not throwing a punch was a problem. Spidey sense wasnt used. And no Uncle Ben reference which surprised me cause I heard that people were tired of the ol origin story. And many didn’t like how he keeps trying to join the avengers. That what I remember about the complaints against the movie.
I have no problem with Tom Holland as Peter Parker or Spider-Man. I like the aspect of the high school story. Seems like the mcu just use various aspects of the character to make their own version that they wanted to tell. But once again this is what we fans wanted.

So I’ve read Spider-Man off and on for years, I didn’t follow through the one more day stuff (and sounds like I should be thankful). I also grew up on the 90’s animated series, so Spider-Man is one of my favorite superheroes. I LOVE Spider-Man Homecoming, it is hands down my favorite MCU film and I never grow tired of watching it. I think the adaptation of Peter Parker for the film works, there are some liberties taken, but the core of the character is still there.

Spider-Man is my most favorite superhero, but I mostly know him through the movie/TV adaptations and the Ultimate comics. I never read ASM itself until I started getting the Epic Collections of vintage stuff. I liked the Homecoming movie overall, although the Raimi movies/Ultimate comics are still my favorite versions of it and the movie does feel somewhat thin when compared to the other MCU installments. I also feel that Homecoming is more of an AU Spidey than an adaptation of the source material, if that makes any sense. It was good on it's own terms, but I think you need to keep that in mind and not judge it in comparison to the source material. Since I'd been hoping for a really faithful Ultimate Spider-Man adaptation, that was something I had to do myself.

I didn't enjoy it that much to be honest. It had it's moments but overall I felt it was a fairly weak film. I liked Holland as Spider-Man and I did like Ganke (oops, ''Ned'' I meant) and there were a couple of funny moments but overall, I was just wasn't feeling it, the Iron Man thing didn't really help IMO. Maybe it's because I wasn't the target audience as it did feel like it was aimed at teenagers primarily.

To be honest I didn't watch the film but I'm not too taken by how they changed his supporting cast with Ned Leeds being basically Ganke Lee and Flash Thompson being a scrawny weakling you can just walk away from. Just as people eat with their eyes an intimidating appearance sells a strong bully. Liz Allen being turned into yet another one note MCU love interest. And the weird idea to substitute Mary Jane Watson with Michelle Jones not really upset by it but it's just weird.

Peter Parker, to me, was best, Tobey Maguire, the first two movies, and even part of the third one; out of character largely, yes, but still miles better than each subsequent reboot.

Tobey Maguire, Peter Parker, and Spider-Man, to me, means being wholesome, apple-pied, and maintaining strong convictions, warmly raised by Uncle Ben and Aunt May, including on doing what is right, on justice, romance, beliefs, and life. All that and still a bit nerdy.

The later the reboots go over the generations since, the more the movies, comics, believes Peter Parker to be an "everyman" teenager, gullible, and being a punk, into vandalism, swearing, innuendo, sex, pornography, and being dumb, and dumb, brash, thoughtless decisions, even with supposedly being a genius.

I liked. I LOVED what they did with Vulture.

What they did with Flash was a bit odd and I don't think I would have cared that much for Ned regardless of what name he got.

I think the monly real complaint is at the end of movie after he rejects Ironman's offer, he doesn't switch over to a more traditional less-Stark-tech suit.

I don't understand how someone could finish watching the movie and have this criticism.

The Homecoming movie delivered, yes. But it was pretty Disneyfied, essentially not much different from your average Disney teen movie on the Disney channel. All it was missing was Zendaya - oh wait!

But I liked it. Its kind of a safe way to go with Spider-Man, nothing too fancy or too out there for the general viewing audience.

Well, in my case, i thougth that was a dumb idea in the first and that he didn't need to go througth that arc, but i know that some people disagreed.

It's an alright movie, but a terrible adaptation of Spider-Man.

I’m sorry, I have a genuine problem with this argument when it comes to comic books. Why? Because no two writers write the character the same way!

There are some details that are important to keep:
*Origin (not perfect, but not contridicted, either)
    *Setting
    *Core characters
*Core traits (for Peter: well meaning, humble, wants to help, doesn’t kill)

Otherwise, no two writers are the same, even with the same character in the same universe. Case and point: Peter Parker. Dan Slott wrote him as a semi-immature tech genius. DeFalco wrote him as a grounded family man. JMS wrote him as a teacher who has adventure in the supernatural realm. Heck, even one writer, Stan Lee, wrote him different with different artists! Lee/Ditko Peter was antisocial, aggressive, and had a massive chip on his shoulder, while Lee/Romita Sr. Peter was a cheerful if shy all-around nice guy.

So was Watt’s Peter different? Massively so. What version of him isn’t?

It's not a terrible adaptation. It's decent. It gets the ordinary high school stuff (in an elite high school though) in a way previous movies didn't.

But I will say that while there have been two great movies in the Spider-Man series (the first two Raimi movies), there has not been a great Spider-Man movie.

What would make a great Spider-Man movie?
