I think the idea is that he threw fight so that the Guardians (who could stomp him into the ground in a direct fight, as I understand it) would underestimate him and not consider what he was actually after from the GL Ring he confiscated.

(sorry, I don't usually flame comics this hard. What's said is Venditti's pre-Rebirth stuff was nothing like this.)
