I don't know what goes on behind-the-scenes,
but I've always liked Capullo's work and never could figure out the reason critics felt his art was "badly drawn".

I agree. Capullo's current work (specifically his work on Batman) is more fluid. I think critics are comparing his early work to his current work which is more evolved and a lot more fluid. But, I always loved his X-Force work.

WHAT? Where was Capullo’s artwork described as “poorly drawn”????
Back in his X-FORCE days, he was heir apparent to take over one of the main titles. His work on the crossover issues of X-Tinction Agenda showed he could play well with all the toys in the x-verse.
But then he got snapped up by McFarlane and worked on SPAWN for an age.

Honestly, it was in an old issue of Wizard. I remember there was a group-shot image of almost every member of X-Force with art from Capullo and, underneath that image, there was a caption that said "badly drawn". Can't remember the exact issue number, but I definitely know it was Wizard Magazine.

Agreed. When he changed his art-style, it became most enjoyable. Immonen's version of Beast's feline-form is a personal favorite:

Immonen is sort of THE superheroes comic-book artist for me. He's not just a superb drawer, but his style is perfect for this genre.

In agreement with you about the artwork of Ron Wagner. I enjoyed his team-up with Jim Lee during the X-Men/Ghost Rider crossover event known as "Brood Trouble in the Big Easy". Jim Lee got all the attention, but I thought Wagner held up his end quite admirably:

I agree. Wagner is what I call a drawer. He could be great in almost every genre: adventure, romance, Sci-Fi, noir, slice of life, superheroes... I think I would buy anything made by him --I don't know about any of his other works, though.
