I first experienced Gaiman with the Vertigo launch of '93.
Sandman was on part 7 of a 9-part story, and I was lost. It wasn't until #50, a few months later, that I started to piece together the framework of the comic.

However, Death: The High Cost of Living (which started at Vertigo's launch) was very new-reader friendly and enjoyable.

Ooh, I just remembered that DC owns Wildstorm characters now (even if they'll never use most of them, I suspect), which allows me to mention my favorite Wildstorm supernatural character, Taboo!

She's just your average high-spirited lass, who wears a dead vampire as mystical shapechanging armor...

    Andrea Rojas aka Acrata

a Mexican national. Andrea's father is Bernardo Rojas, a former political leader in Central America who now researches "prehispanic cultures" at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana de Mexico. She lives alone with her cat Zapata.
Acrata's powers came from an ancient Mayan symbol which represents the shadows in the night, which allows her to teleport whenever in shadow. It is unknown how Andrea came into possession of the symbol. She is also a talented hand-to-hand fighter.

    Mine, too.

    For me...
    1. Books of Magic mini-series
    2. The American Gothic storyline in Swamp Thing (#37-50)
    3. Death: The High Cost of Living
    4. The Zatanna mini-series from Seven Soldiers
    5. The Phantom Stranger issue of Secret Origins

And depending on if Promethea ends up in the DC Universe, or not, similar to Tom Strong in Terrifics, I'd insert Promethea at #3.

Not an actual DC Universe Supernatural character...
But this JLI cover was an homage to The Exorcist.

Miiyahbin "Mii" Marten is a 16-year-old Cree girl from Moose Factory Island, Ontario, who became the superhero Equinox. She uses the power of the Midayo, embodiment of the seven pillars of Cree life, to protect her people from the Whitago - the embodiment of the seven dark pillars.

One of the better ideas from the New 52.
