Default USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor closed indefinitely

Not exactly cheerful news during Memorial Day weekend here in the US.

USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor closed indefinitely
HONOLULU (AP) — Damage to the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu was worse than expected and it will remain closed indefinitely, officials said.
Boat transportation to the attraction was suspended May 6 after one of the vessel operators noticed a crack on the outside of the memorial, Hawaii News Now reported .
Tourists were allowed to disembark at the memorial after crews completed interim repairs. But the cracks reappeared hours later, indicating a more serious issue.
“There is a brow or an edge where the visitor ramp meets the memorial, and at that point, there’s been some fissures located on the exterior,” said Jay Blount, a spokesman for the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. “After further investigation on the interior, it was determined that the structure is not supporting the loading ramp the way that we need.”

Hopefully they'll come up with a solution sooner rather than later.

Don't they do routine maintenance on the memorial at least once every year?
Maybe before they dropped workers and slashed budgets, this is the inevitable result of slash and burn governing.

Latest check (on the day before the 77th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor) seems to show that repairs have not been completed yet.
Visitor access to the USS Arizona Memorial has been suspended for several months due to movement of the loading dock and corresponding movement of the loading ramp to the memorial, which poses a safety concern for our visitors. While repairs are made, the USS Arizona Memorial will remain closed. Repairs are expected to be completed by March 2019. Updates will be provided on our website and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/valorNPS).

Also, unfortunately, it does not appear that any of the remaining survivors of that attack who are still with us will be at ceremonies at Pearl Harbor this December 7th.
For first time, no USS Arizona survivors will be in attendance at ceremonies to mark attack on Pearl Harbor

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - When a moment of silence is observed at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center Friday morning to commemorate the attack on Pearl Harbor, it will be without an important component.
No one who survived the bombing of the USS Arizona battleship will be in the audience.
“This is the very first year,” said Daniel Martinez, historian with the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument.
Health issues and doctor's orders prevented Lou Conter from coming.
“She said you cannot go. You better cancel out,” he said in telephone interview from his home in California.
Conter is 97. The handful of survivors of the battleship’s sinking are all in their 90s.
"I've noticed the interest of people asking, 'Will there be any of them there?' because they've been so visible," Martinez said.
You can read the rest here:According to the article, only five of the survivors from the attack on Pearl Harbor are still alive these days.

I was there this summer. I wondered how much longer The Remaining Old Salts could keep at it.

I hope the time they got to spend at the museum brought them joy, and that what time is left them is peaceful.

Here's the latest that's posted regarding the USS Arizona Memorial situation:
Visitor access to the USS Arizona Memorial is suspended due to movement of the loading dock and corresponding movement of the loading ramp to the memorial. The National Park Service has awarded the contract for repair of the anchoring system. Repairs are projected to be complete by fall 2019 and in time for the next December 7 remembrance, provided no issues arise during the construction period. We appreciate the public's continued patience as we work as fast as possible to fix the dock at the USS Arizona Memorial. Updates will be provided on our website and Facebook page.

Very sad to read. Just taught WWII to my students this past month .

I am sure they will rebuild. Unfortunately our f*(&ed up Government won't pay for it (not when they can spend $100 million on Trump's Golf trips).
So somebody will have to raise private donations. Fortunately the wealth in this country just got an extra $ trillion from their tax cut, so maybe they can spare some loose change.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

    You're dreaming, unfortunately.

    They could, but they won't.

About what, rich a-holes forking over some dough for this? Yeah, I know.

Folks, can we just remember those who died and keep the politics out of this thread?

(Especially if nobody is providing any facts regarding things like whether the restoration work funding specifically is being delayed for other reasons or not?)

I see it is run by the National Park Service, not the DoD. So either Congress will have to allocate money for this, or they will do it with donations, like the WWII Memorial. it was originally built through private donations, including a big one from Elvis. So it looks like that is where the new money will come from.
Either way, sounds like a complete rebuild is needed.
The only figure I could find for the original cost was around $500,000 in 1950, so that is around $5 million today.
