Turns out the secret is just getting great filmmakers (Patty Jenkins and Peter Ramsey & Lord & Miller) and letting them do their thing.

Actually no, all of Sony Pictures Animation's fully animated films are done in-house through Sony Pictures Imageworks. It's Warner Bros. that outsources their animated films, with Happy Feet and The Lego Movies done by Animal Logic, and Storks & Smallfoot actually done by Sony Imageworks, thats why those films visually look so similar to stuff like the Cloudy and Hotel T films.

Seeing as one of their main complaints is the animation - which everyone else agrees is absolutely stunning - this review earns a shoulder shrug.
