As the comics have had plots about before--the Norse Gods know where they go when they die (Valhalla). (And someone like Loki might also know how to escape from it). He could certainly have a plan/went to get help/do something to set up for another Thor movie.

Clearly Thanos deserves the blame/credit for what happened, but IF we must blame the heroes than it goes to Gamora because his entire plan depended on her telling him where the Soul stone was.

He likely had the power to extract the information from her at some point anyway. Enough Deus ex Machina tech that could have gotten it. That's why she needed to be dead.

Presumably all he would have needed is the mind stone. That fact that he knew she knew the soul stone's location makes it a little odd he didn't go for the mind stone first.

Also perhaps mildly interesting that those are the only two stones we didn't actually see him using.

We see him use the soul stone when Strange makes dozens of copies of himself during their battle on Titan.

Star Lord is the only one who actively sabotages and gives Thanos the win. Without his interference he loses hard on that weird planet.
