For Batman Day, my store had all their DC non-release-week merchandise 60% off, so I bought a bunch of back issues! I hope, next year or in the next few years, Batman Day will feature one of King's Batman stories - maybe Brave and the Mold, or Every Epilogue is a Prologue!

Anyone else do fun stuff for Batman Day?

Last year I broke down and rebought all of the King issues I already own physically (and in trade!) digitally.

This year I bought a couple issues of the Englehart run that I don't think were available on Comixology last year and tomorrow I'll go to a comic expo.

It's the Dynamic Duo! Batman and Robin!... and Red Robin and Red Hood and Nightwing and Batwoman and Batgirl and Orphan and Spoiler and Bluebird and Lark and Gotham Girl and Talon and Batwing and Huntress and Azreal and Flamebird and Batcow?

Since when could just anybody do what we trained to do? It makes it all dumb instead of special. Like it doesn't matter anymore.

King is doing a sort of AMA thing on twitter! I'll definitely try to post my favorite answers here when I think it's wrapped up! But people should go ask questions! I got one answered!

Second, I think you're definitely right about this being a "meanwhile" story. It all happens between the Nain Pit and the end of #77. I think the editor's note is kinda stupid, but I liked the reference to Bruce talking to Damian, because it means he is actually paying attention, because he's Batman.

I'd be curious to hear the loop you see in the plot, though!
First, thank you for the welcome. And thank you also for this thread! King's Batman run has been a favorite since issue 10. It's been a nuanced, emotional, (sometimes frustrating) roller coaster ride that hasn't had me this excited for Batman comics since Snyder's Black Mirror run. Trying to argue with people about why it's such a good run (and why issue 50 was f'ing exciting) has been a major frustration for me. So I'm glad to be here.

Now, to explain my point. In 77, Bruce is still bed-ridden and still has his head up his ass regarding having to get back to Gotham and with where he stands with Selina. It's an arc started in 75, brought to conclusion with the takedown of Magpie. So 78 and 79 can't possibly take place before 77 because Damian infiltrates Gotham (after discussing with Tim their lack of options in 76) while Bruce is still bed-ridden.

King is uses "Now" and "Then" pretty well, so if Bruce/Selina moments were supposed to take place prior to the events occurring in Gotham, I feel like he'd say so. Also, I feel that if the Bruce/Selina stuff happened before 75 but after 74, which is totally feasible, they'd say so, despite that being a bit arbitrary.

As I see it, if that Alfred is a fake (and what a helluva twist that would be!), it makes this whole scenario a bit more digestible, but that's a pretty dick thing to do to Damian. If that is the real Alfred, which I fear is most probable, it's just inherently irresponsible for Bruce to do, because he should damn well know better. If they tug on the plot thread of this being Bruce's fault, then it will be about as frustrating as Bruce failing to stop Kite-Man's son from dying, teaming up with the Riddler subsequently and rather than helping Kite-Man out going forward, continues to beat him to a pulp. It's also about as frustrating as Heroes In Crisis from a plot perspective.

My point is, by making that editor's note and adding in those two lines of dialogue, they've so arbitrarily made a thing out of something that very much did NOT need to be a thing. Editorially, it was just a bad move. The issues read very well as is. Obviously, the next 6 issues will determine if this is a "thing" or not but the fact that we're even talking about it kind of insists that it will be.

I dunno. I think you can insert all of 78-79 between the Paris scenes and the final page of Bat and Cat, and it makes sense.

So, here’s what we learned from Tom King on Batman Day:

https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...63221035188225 “As I do on Batman day each year, let me know if you have Batman questions and I’ll try to provide some Batman answers. Thanks!”

who wins in a batfamily battle royale? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...63871559217153 “Dick. Best fighter and ally maker combo.”

Who is your ideal successor for Bruce’s legacy? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...64222345617408 “Geoff John’s Tim, from his Teen Titans run. He was on the way.”

Why would you want to write Batman as a love story at the first place ? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...64787075129345 “Probably cause I’m in love with my wife and that’s my every day. This comes out in a lot of what I do.”

More about “The Button” before your run ends? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...64886484262912 “Yup. In 84.” - related: How did Batdad end up in the main universe? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...68573826912256 “That’ll be in 84. Right near the end.”

Is Zatanna ever gonna make an appearance in your run? I think it’d be neat to see her react to the BatCat romance. https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...65341432074245 “Nope. Wish there was time for everyone. Love their history from the Dini stuff.”

If you could give Batman one piece of advice, what would it be? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...65679983714304 “Appreciate Alfred.”

What does Ace think about the Bat Cat romance? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...66132704247808 “Ace is all about the love. And meat. But mostly meat.”

Favorite Villain? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...66702852820993 “Kite Man. That poor man.” - related: Do you think Kite-Man can become a hero? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...72349141311489 “Charlie Brown will never kick the football. But his faith is eternal and therefore a touch noble.”

What is your favorite Batman story, btw ? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...67148602462208 “DKR. I’m a cliche of myself.”

Favorite Bat-suit? Cinema or books. https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...67257901834245 “Books. He can turn his head.” - related: Will bring back the rebirth batsuit? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...98363711758338 “Not in my stuff. Love that design; I’m sure it’ll return at some point. But I love the current classic Hush design even more.”

not sure if I’ll be seen but was curious on Batman day what comic you think most inspired your run https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...68153813573634 “Frank Miller’s Born Again. For sure. Too obviously really.”

Favorite Robin? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...68406566510592 “Dick Grayson. His butt cheeks are named.”

Where is Helena Wayne? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...68712167641089 “In Batman Annual 2 and also...something coming soon...shhh”

Favorite artist that you haven’t worked with that’s worked on Batman? (Batman 50 artists don’t count) https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...69083455889409 “That’s still with us? Frank Miller (who was in 50 and did a cover—-so almost!)”

Will Cluemaster show up again in your stuff? Steph needs to punch her dad some more! (I WILL LET DISCERNING READERS GUESS WHO ASKED THIS QUESTION) https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...70647457267714 “Nope no Cluemaster. Or his fun code.”

beyond what we've seen with the nightwing/kgbeast storyline, will we see more explorations of batman as a father? it's one of my favorite aspects of the character https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...73349692182528 “A little at the end. A lot in Bat/Cat.”

What has been your favorite part of your Batman run and what has been your least favorite? I can't think of a least favorite there all amazing but my favorite is the whole Bat and Cat parts (which take up alot of it) https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...75810767163394 “I really like Batman Annual 2; I think Batman 2-4 are a bit weak. Was getting my legs beneath me.”

Mitch said he feels your Batman is around 50 years old. Do you agree with him? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...76070272950273 “I could see that.”

Haven't read Batman in...a while. Though I did read Batman 50 (good job btw loved it), I'll admit I was kind of lost. Where do I start with your run? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...76436284690434 “Pretty much every 25 issues is a chapter. So 1, 25, 75 are good spots.”

Was the "We met on the beach" moment planned from the start? If so? Brilliant. https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...80290862669826 “Yes. Ish.”

What will it take for Bruce to give up being Bats or has he given up too much of his existence to being Batman? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...81095388848129 “Find out in issue 82.”

not Batman-related directly, but after the « Good Intentions » trilogy and the one right now with Miracle, Batman and HiC, is Strange the beginning of a new era/trilogy for you ? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...88217321213953 “Yup. Strange and Bat/Cat are addressing a new theme.”

The "boat vs street" thing in @TomKingTK's Batman makes me realize that Year One paints Bruce's early Batman years as gritty and grounded, but the old Silver Age stuff is mostly still canon, so his life goes from Miller right to Dick Sprang and then back again in like two years. https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...26640786583553 “Which is probably more true to life than everything being consistent. As yo go along, it sometimes seems you have many authors.”

Have you ever considered bring back someone from 60's TV show? Like King Tut? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...47298669051904 “Tried to. Legal vetoed it. See Batman 55 for our creation of the incredibly memorable Fantasic Pharaoh or something. My real legacy.”

are u gonna work with jorge fornes again?? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...69591759724545 “Hell yeah. He’s doing the next annual, which is sort of my ultimate thesis/last word on Batman, and he’s doing one more issue near the end.”

i’ve loved how you’ve written the robins when they’ve appeared. what made you chose to include them as little as you did? we’re there ever plans for a more robins centered arc or was it always batcat? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...71825255956480 “Robin appearances were limited by stuff going on in other books/plans sadly. Love writing them.”

which is your proudest moment as Batman writter? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...77627022843909 “When Lee Weeks won a Ringo for Batman/Fudd and got a standing ovation. So long deserved.”

if you could point to one moment/scene/issue of your run thus far as “the one you want them to remember you for” what would it be? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...79059214049280 “Bruce and Swamp Thing having tea in the library from 23. Got a beautiful Mitch Gerads print of it up in my office.”

In addition to Andrea Beaumont, can we expect another big presence on the BatCat miniseries? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...79224171778050 “Yes. A big one.”

When you started mapping out your Batman run did you always intend for it to end with The Phantasm? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...80778060812293 “No. That was Clay Mann’s brilliance. But she fit perfectly into the plan, so awesome.”

Why did you choose to write Batman and what did you like the most about his mythology?? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...81656704528386 “You don’t say no to Batman...until you do. I like how he took his pain and built a family.”

Soo.... did you guys meet on the street...or a boat? https://twitter.com/TomKingTK/status...91022732165121 “My wife and I can’t agree on where our first date was some 19 years back. This is actually the origin of the boat/street talk. Write what you know, or what you don’t, rather.”

I appreciate the effort in formatting that all to post here! I was following along today too.

I don’t want to be too negative here, but I think that Robin(s) not being allowed to show up in a Batman book because of editorial is a huge symbol of what is wrong with the Bat-Office and books right now.

But on a more constructive note, I am surprised by how much King was willing to give away both behind the scenes and of his upcoming work. That connection of the street/boat with him and his wife is a pretty mind blowing revelation. And of course Helena is big, big news.

I feel like I haven't quite contributed the kind of content to the board recently that I wanted to when I started it - I hope that as we transition to Bat/Cat, I'll be able to give deeper analysis rather than just enthusiastic short takes. So I thought I'd collect my favorite tweets today relevant to the run!

I do agree that the feeling that the editors won't just let the Robins show up and be family, and let fans figure out how it all fits together, is not great. Though on my website, our senior editor actually does care about that kind of thing, so I guess there's lots of those kinds of fans who are frustrated by lack of things lining up who talk to the editors.

All the behind the scenes and teases were a really cool thing from King. I love that kind of insight and shared enthusiasm.

Gotta say I enjoyed seeing the Samuroids again this issue. Still invading. Stealth drop, those guys are becoming like the most persistent threat to the entirety of the DCU. Every time we cut anywhere people be fighting Samuroids.

Remember a few months ago when King said that he got the approval to do something "that's going to change the character for a generation, or maybe more. Maybe forever"?
