God, I feel old. But still, I have a soft spot for that first X-Men movie. It helped usher in the current era of superhero movies. For that, it deserves a special place in the history of the genre.

Some interesting casting tidbits about the first X-men movie...

Before shooting started, the studio needed to find a cast, but what no one expected was for actors to be fighting for a role in X-Men. "I have lots of warm memories of people that came in wanting to be in the movie," executive producer Ralph Winter recalls. **"Michael Jackson was a big comic fan and wanted to play Charles Xavier. Shaquille O’Neal showed up at the offices and wanted to play Forge, who wasn’t in the movie."**....

**Director Bryan Singer and Hayter flew to Vancouver to offer Charlize Theron the role of Jean Grey, but she said no**, while Terrence Stamp pushed hard for the chance to become Professor X.

"Patrick Stewart didn’t want to [play Charles Xavier]. It took a long time to convince him," Hayter remembers. "Terence Stamp told me, ‘You know why Patrick doesn’t want to do it? Because of the chair. He doesn’t want to be stuck in the chair. But I don’t mind. In fact, I also look excellent bald.’Everyday I was surprised by the faces coming in. Like, I’d find Mariah Carey sitting in my office wanting to go talk to Bryan about being Storm or something. So that’s always shocking."

Shaq as Forge? Would he created a device to help him ace free throws?

    Mariah as Storm? Hell naw!

Charlize as Jean would have been tight DOE!

Aww that actually makes me feel a little bad for Terence Stamp. Casting anecdotes are so fascinating. Imagine if Dougray Scott didn't have to drop out. Would he have delivered? Would the world have been deprived of Hugh Jackman rising to fame?

Here's some confirmed actors/actresses who actually signed on and left/had to leave (not just rumors):

    Original Trilogy -
    Wolverine: Dougray Scott, scheduling
    Cyclops: Jim Caviezal, scheduling/creative differences
    Jean Grey: Peta Wilson, scheduling

    First Class -
Emma - Alice Eve, creative differences
Beast - Benjamin Walker, let go and then asked back but declined

And the big IMO "pre-boot" casting mistakes:
    - JLaw, first for the role as written and then continuing with it
    - Letting go of Walker in favor of skewing more Twighlight-type casting
    - Sophie Turner over Saoirse Ronan because of social media followers (Turner admitted). I mean... come on.
    - Alexandra Shipp over Zendaya. Who knew Zendaya would make a meteoric jump in fame/popularity/badass-ery in the next few years.

For the OT, it was hard to get the movie made, so I can totally understand the chaotic casting. But for the FC era, they just still didn't have a clue. They are so lucky they got McAvoy and Fassy for First Class because otherwise I think the franchise would have died right then and there and we would have never gotten DOFP... which is where the franchise should have ended lol.
