Like this doesn't feel like the kind of serious that needs some casual dialogue and a surprise punch for levity.

Nah. The variant cover of this issue coming out is of Kilowog's corpse from when Hal killed him in ET. The variants don't really tie-in with the story proper.

It's like Tom King has like no clue about Barbara's speech patterns like at all.

Barbara has more in common with the Joker in that scene then she does her own character.

I get King was trying to go for some humor with Barbara and Harley there, but I don't think it works with how he has built the story. It just feels very awkward to read.
