They aren't legacies in the same way Kyle or Barry are, picking up the mantle or being a redesign. Sidekicks are supposed to one day take over for their mentor and continue the never ending battle. I would consider all sidekicks to be legacy characters since they are continuing on what their mentors started, ie legacy.

We had the JSA, JLA but then there was also Teen Titans, Titans.
There were legacy characters side by side with their idols/mentors
    Jay and Wally
    Bart & Max
    John/Guy & Kyle
    Ollie/Connor
    Bruce/Dick
    Dick/Tim
We had great titles like Starman and Manhunter that built upon the great characters of the Golden & Silver Age
Adam Strange was cool again. Hawkman's history actually made sense and he kicked arse!
Roy was an agent of Checkmate and COMPETENT.

Guess I am getting old. I never thought I'd ever say "Things were better when I was younger"
That era to me is the height of DC's quality line-wide.

IRRC he only had guest appearances in other books as checkmate agent, but not really any solo stories or appearances in checkmate stories. And I'm not sure how competent he was back than.

Roy, Dick, Wally, Garth, Kyle - all have been screwed in various severity.
Well, most of them got nudged out by the attempts to de-age their mentors AND to still hold onto the generation that later filled their roles as the "Teen Titans" and such.
It was probably either them or Tim's friends, and I don't know how much the Geoff Johns association with Tim, Bart, Cassie, Kon-El, etc. made taking them out of the picture less desirable.

There is SO much more to DC than the Silver Age reiterations of these characters!
Don't forget, the return of the JSA on Earth-2 was a significant Silver Age moment, as were the annual JLA/JSA team-ups each summer. If DC hadn't been so gung-ho to "reimagine" the Golden Age heroes for New52's Earth 2 mess, this wouldn't have been a problem.
(But also, DC screwing over the JSA is something that pre-dates even the DiDio regime.)

They were the original "Next Generation" heroes that didn't quite make it to full-on Legacy replacements.

They are though. They don't need to have the same exact name as their "prime hero" to be legacy heroes.

I was under the impression "legacy hero" meant "hero who takes on the identity of a retired or dead hero". That doesn't apply to Roy or Garth who have never gone by Green Arrow or Aquaman.

I was under that impression too, or a hero who no longer uses that identity.
Imagine being proud to have negative traits. I can’t relate.

That's how I tend to see it too. But it seems like "legacy" is a lot like "reboot" in the comic lexicon, in the sense its definition is a bit liberal.

Than no one in the Super Family would count since they've never taken his name even when dead except Lex Luthor which is funny. If you continue the legacy of a hero you are a legacy hero IMO.

Yeah the death flag could be seen a mile away but this is still an utter disgrace. King is throwing away longstanding characters for cheap shock value. Or maybe it's Didio/Lee using King's story for their gimmicks. Either way Heroes in Crisis is definitely ticking people off.
