A writer doesn't always agree with his characters, though. I certainly Poppy Z Brite doesn't agree with her characters, or else, based on what she writes, it would mean she's a sociopath.
That's cool except for the fact that King is the one that has pushed all of these characters to embrace escapism. It's not that it was a natural progression that he went with, it's that he intentionally has set them on these courses. That puts it completely on his shoulders, especially when his whole schtick is dealing with trauma. This indicates that he has no business trying to write about this topic because he doesn't appear to understand healthy ways of dealing with trauma.
How... did this thread venture into this dark corner of conversations so abruptly?

There has been considerable discussion of King's Mister Miracle here:

I strongly recommend this series if you're a fan of either the Kirby Fourth World or deep philosophical drama interposed with humor and the mundane. It is brilliant.
Imagine being proud to have negative traits. I can’t relate.

We didn't get to see much of the therapy, but from Lagoon Boy's experience it seems to be based on the idea that people either hide from things they're afraid of, or don't get the chance to say what they need to say or do what they need to do with people they've lost. For Lagoon Boy therapy took the form of experiencing his trauma over and over until it lost its ability to frighten him, while for Wally it would presumably have involved getting a chance to say goodbye to his family. He just never got that far before he was killed.
