No love for Dick Donner/Chris Reeve? You're killing me, dude! I think I like Batman Returns better than 89, but 89 is rad too. Weird Bat symbol and all.
I'm doing my rewatch tonight but I remember thinking it could have used a lot more of the bombastic neon color (I laughed that they used the aerobic costume twice because 80s) and the soundtrack was surprisingly bereft of 80s hits, repurposed like Blue Monday or otherwise. Hell, I was surprised Blue Monday from the trailer wasn't used, or if they did I totally missed it. I was streaming it on Discord with my girlfriend (who is sick with COVID so it was the only way we could watch together and stay in sync rather than using our individual accounts) so I know I may have missed some of the music. Overall, they didn't abuse the '80s setting too much aside from Steve getting acclimated to the '80s, which is fair considering it's actually the point of the scene.
Even watching it I knew the film wasn't perfect, it has flaws, but it's decidedly more Wonder Woman for this long-time reader than the first movie, which while it spoke very well to Diana as a character, seemed a bit preoccupied with the warrior aspect of her (granted, it's a war movie and that's fair, but the movie was set at war to play up the warrior princess element) whereas here Diana was a more rounded representation of who she is and did an excellent job highlighting that she's a heroic person concerned with the lives of everyone around her, including her foes, and that any loss of life is tragic. The Diana of the first film struck me as someone who is fine killing in war because, well, it's war and if she must, she must. This Diana contrasts that with "save every last person you can if there's the option to do so, let peace reign" which is more Diana than the former... Granted, with enough time the former may well be the new norm, but like with many of DC's characters that just dumbs her down to a very simple, digestible archtype rather than the character who's been developed over 80 years.
Glad to hear Jenkins is getting greenlit for a third movie, though it's probably going to be 4 or so years before we see it given her Star Wars commitments.
