I have been reading and enjoying this series. The ideas are fascinating and the art/story is very well executed. However, I find that I have the same problem with this story that I have with all of Millar's stories - the people he depicts are such atrocious human beings that I have a hard time feeling any real sympathy for them. I don't really care that much if they live or die. I think that is entirely intentional and a reflection of Millar's very dark vision of the world (I'd hate to meet him in person!) but it does create (for me) a certain kind of disengagement.

I agree entirely. I usually avoid Millar's work like people should avoid the plague... but v2's Immonen art and Great Old One made me read and enjoy it. I've heard the argument that all of the volumes are formulaic: bad magicians try to destroy the good magicians. Having only read v2, I can't speak to that beyond saying that was what v2 was about. I like Dike Ruan's art so I'll be reading v4 when it comes out in trade.
