IMO? He tried to make it into a kids' book. Gen X was a New Mutants-style teen book but with a 90s alternative bent--quirky, weird, and diverse but with the X-Men franchise angst and melodrama. Hama came at it as a young children's fantasy adventure, something aimed more at 7-9 year olds.
