In "Superman's Greatest Feats," SUPERMAN 146 (July 1961), the Man of Steel travels through time and discovers that, unlike all the other occasions, he's able to change history. Astonished at this, he goes about righting a lot of wrongs in the universe, including saving his parents Jor-El and Lara from Krypton's destruction. After he performs all these feats, at the end of the story, the Man of Tomorrow realizes he's in a parallel universe to his own and he returns to his own Earth (presumably Earth-One).
But what happened in that alternate universe? There must be a Kal-El on that other Earth, who was raised on Earth by Jor-El and Lara. And the Earth of that universe has a very different history. While the Superman that performed those feats must be seen as an enigmatic god-figure who intervened in the destiny of their world and then went away. Maybe there's a religion dedicated to this mystery god and his followers await his return one day.
