In "Superman's Greatest Feats," SUPERMAN 146 (July 1961), the Man of Steel travels through time and discovers that, unlike all the other occasions, he's able to change history. Astonished at this, he goes about righting a lot of wrongs in the universe, including saving his parents Jor-El and Lara from Krypton's destruction. After he performs all these feats, at the end of the story, the Man of Tomorrow realizes he's in a parallel universe to his own and he returns to his own Earth (presumably Earth-One).

But what happened in that alternate universe? There must be a Kal-El on that other Earth, who was raised on Earth by Jor-El and Lara. And the Earth of that universe has a very different history. While the Superman that performed those feats must be seen as an enigmatic god-figure who intervened in the destiny of their world and then went away. Maybe there's a religion dedicated to this mystery god and his followers await his return one day.

Superman: The Light Knight Returns - After many years Luthor has used Brainiac's technology to make humanity's world progressive and has his own advanced security force policing the world. An older Superman decides to come out of retirement to stop the combination of technology turning humans into mindless drones and a civil war filled with powerful weapons from turning Earth into the next Krypton.

Broad strokes, Kal El is a military representative of a Krypton that still exists, and he's gone to Earth to decide what the Kryptonian empire should do with it. Kal has daddy issues; Zod involved. Kal kills Captain Marvel at some point. Luthor teams up with Lois and Bruce Wayne to figure out a way to stop him. Jimmy Olsen befriends a rookie Martian Manhunter. Obligatory love triangle between Lois, Luthor and Kal. Luthor kills Wayne in secret then exposes J'Onn as an alien and he's murdered for it. Lois picks up a project Wayne was working on and becomes Batwoman. Mary Marvel, Mera and Hippolyta emerge to defend Earth. Kal makes the decision for Krypton to invade.

It's a passing of the torch, indictment of regressive patriarchy-kinda thing.

Superman is sent to some planet where one of the world conquers/destroyers that the JL defeated went after and sees the damage that they did there. Seeing that he and the League could have stopped that from happening if they don't just repelled the attack on Earth makes him want to help other planets. So basically he would decide that Earth have enough protectors and would go own to save and free every planet that was enslaved by those enemies that he defeated on Earth.
