Just a brief follow up. I used to work at a local hospital years ago as a laboratory records clerk. The laboratory services department included the clinical tests like Blood glucoes leves, cultures plus pathology reports on biopsies etc. This also included autopsies. If I worked the weekend, one of our tasks was to go down to the morgue and check on the temperature of the room where they kept patients who had passed away and were awaiting the funeral home to come or an autopsy had been requested.

One Saturday, the pathologist had to come in because the family requested an autopsy to be done before releasing the deceased to the funeral home. Before beginning, the pathologist wanted to review the patient's chart, which in those days were still being kept in a metallic binder. They usually keep the charts on the floor and the pathologist gets them from the RN. But the chart wasn't there. They spoke with the R/N on duty and found out they took the chart down to the morgue along with the patient. So the pathologist called to ask for someone to go get the chart and bring it to his office in the pathology department. So I had to go down there and find it. It turns out that whoever took the gurney down slid the chart under the body of the deceased! I only went as close to the body as I need to and stretched my arm so I could just reach the chart and then left as quickly as possible!

Wow, thats so creepy! I've not been in a morgue specifically, but my uncle was a pathologist and he gave me a tour of his lab one time. The stuff they had sitting around in various jars was a bit traumatizing. But it was fascinating to see how they did their jobs, and the sophisticated equipment they were using.

I'm sure that they have much better tools to use today. The hospital pathologist did not do the criminal cases but the county coroner frequently would "borrow" one of the hospital morgues in the county. Finally they got the state to fund one of their own.

We also employed pathology assistants and sometimes they would start the preliminary work. One of them got a bit freaked out to see that the person he would be working on was an old high school teacher he had.

Jeez! As much as I love horror films and books, I'm the opposite when it comes to the real world. Working in a morgue, cemetery, or funeral home would age me almost overnight.

Congratulations to Tami for a cover which focused on the love between those living after a loved one has passed as opposed to the horror and fear of corpses getting up from a slab. Many drawings are capable of filling us with fear or dread but fewer are capable of bringing out other emotions as Tami's did.

As for what he's learned this week, the captain realizes it pays to look deeper in his knowledge of covers and his long history with the comic book. Jumping on something quickly so it's not used by someone else can work, but more often than not, in my experience, there are often better out there.
