Shippers ship because they like or connect with the characters and their chemistry, inspired by the source material or the potential they see, not necessarily by what actually happens. That's why people can ship anything regardless of canon. What's gonna happen is they're gonna stop trusting source material that disappoint them and write their own. They may double down on the shipping because the actual canon won't fulfill what they want.
