Default How to actually read AXIS Event?

Hi, I've been roadmapping my way through the Marvel universe and there's this event called AXIS.

The way I heard I should read

    Avengers & X-Men: AXIS, Issue #1-9
    AXIS: Revolutions, Issue #1-4

And then there are those tie-ins

    All-New X-Factor, Vol. 3: Axis
Axis Hobgoblin #1-3 & Axis: Carnage #1-3 in Axis: Hobgoblin & Carnage
    Deadpool, Vol. 7: Axis
    Inhuman, Vol. 2: Axis
    Magneto, Vol. 2: Reversals #9-10
    Nova, Vol. 5: Axis

1 - How relevant is to read those tie ins?
2 - Since I don't read any of these comics, would I miss too much reading them?
3 - Or would I miss too much if I didn't read them?
4 - Also, should I read these comics before or after Axis main event?

    Thanks in advance!

Haha I wasn’t going to be THAT direct, but I’m going to recommend avoiding the story all together. It really fell short of feeling like the story mattered or was of any consequence. It felt like a shoehorned event and the rest of “All New All Different Marvel” unfortunately didn't track any better.

I would just read the core title and Magneto.

The Deadpool tie ins were good. As per usual under Duggan.

You read the wiki summary and move on. Nothing in that comic is worth your time on any level.

The book ain't even really relevant on any level. It had almost no impact at all and what it did very briefly changed, you dont need to read Axis for anyways.

People are being seriously unhelpful here. If he didn't want to read the story, he wouldn't have asked about how to best read the story. I've deliberately read dumb stories before because of a particular continuity point in them (or just because they existed) and comments like "don't read it" are extremely unhelpful. AXIS, in particular, is relevant for the whole Charles Xavier brain thing, the Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver retcon, and the inversion thing that lasted for a few years for a couple characters.

Anyway, it's been a long time since I read the story. I have a list of books I ended up reading, but I can't comment on the books I didn't read. Keep in mind that it builds out of Uncanny Avengers so 1-23 predates the story. I also have Uncanny X-Force listed as a prelude, but I can't recall why (I didn't read either book before I started).

Here is the rest of the list:

    Magneto 9
    Uncanny Avengers 24
    Magneto 10
    Captain America 22-24
    Uncanny Avengers 25
    Captain America 25

    Avengers & X-Men: Axis 1
    Avengers & X-Men: Axis 2
    Magneto 11
    Avengers & X-Men: Axis 3
    Magneto 12
    Deadpool 36
    Avengers & X-Men: Axis 4
    Superior Iron Man 1
    Deadpool 37
    Avengers & X-Men: Axis 5
    Avengers World 15
    Avengers World 16
    Avengers & X-Men: Axis 6
    Superior Iron Man 2
    Superior Iron Man 3
    Deadpool 38
    Avengers & X-Men: Axis 7
    Avengers & X-Men: Axis 8
    Avengers & X-Men: Axis 9
    Deadpool 39

I really liked the Deadpool tie-ins and would definitely recommend reading those as both good and useful contributions to the story. Superior Iron Man is also a very good series that's perhaps less relevant but gives more of a flavor of the inversion. Magneto was also important for story reasons. I skipped X-Factor and Wolverine and the X-Men so I can't comment on whether they had anything useful. I also feel like I maybe should have considered either the Carnage or Hobgoblin story so I could see the inversion on the other end (bad guys turning good), but I seem to recall negative opinions on those books.

I recall hearing the Hobgoblin tie in was pretty fun also.

I'm surprised Remender's Cap run was recommended. I'd also recommend Cap America & the Mighty Avengers #1-3

    and Nova #23 - 25
    The X-Men tie-ins were boring one-shots.

Speaking of Charles Xavier's brain, doesn't the Red Skull still have it? And did they ever follow up on that last panel where Doom was keeping the Red Skull as a captive in Latveria? I can't recall anything about it after that.

No, this plot was resolved just prior to the start of Secret Empire (in a wonderful bit of coordination and tight continuity between Uncanny Avengers, Captain America: Steve Rogers, and USAvengers).

So they broke him out of Latveria? I think I had passed on those. Do you remember the key issues and I can look them up?

He appears as the antagonist in Uncanny Avengers vol. 3 #18 - 22. He gets offed by Hydra Cap in that series (#15???)

According to the Marvel Wiki the version of Red Skull appears in the Pleasant Hill story but I never collected that.

I don't recall his escape being explained but Doom losing his assets due to the post-SW status quo is probably the answer.

I would also throw in that you should really read the Agent of Asgard tie-ins. I'm not going to tell you which issues to read, because you should really read the entire thing. It's also unique in that it gives AXIS an important place in the Incursion storylines.
