-- who DON'T have their roots in comic books?

Say what you want about heroines in comic books in terms of quality; they've often had a better record for heroines in terms of *quantity,* and especially heroines who follow the archetype of "the Amazon," which I define as--

*a female character who shows herself proficient in armed or unarmed combat*

IMO at least, I think this is why the original legend of the Amazons scandalized the Greeks, in that it suggested women could become martially proficient enough to operate without patriarchal supervision. Now, the Amazonian heroine, whether "super" or not, is a major element in popular culture, but who are the big names outside comic books?

You can name featured heroines, villains, or even sidekicks, as long as they can fight, whether it's using kung-fu or gun-fu, sorcery or sci-fi gadgets. Anyone as long as she didn't start out in a comic book-- be it prose, film, TV, or even comic strips.

I have no doubt that a lot more than a hundred exist, but would be curious to see what response the topic gets before it dies out.
