Wow millenumber1 was right a few weeks ago. This thread is entirely off the rails.

Doesn't help that the forums are still incredibly screwed up. Seriously. If CBR wants to fix their server problems by driving away a huge part of the userbase, they're doing a bang up job.

We are still talking about alternate distribution possibilities for comic book, but we ran into trouble with what a comic books is. They are periodicals, and not graphic novels or collections. It is the monthly release that fuels the interest, like a soap opera.

Repeating it won't make it true.

Except we know that books exists that don't sell at all as monthlies while leading the trades charts.

Politely, about a zillion cancelled titles point to this probably not being the case.

Let alone that the assertion disregards that there are writers whose work reads better in collections, and that there are fans who will come to that conclusion.

I understand that is how you feel but is not an assertion. It is a fact of the business that comics arer periodicals and that the books are designed to be read monthly or whatever the period is for the book. In Karen Burger's interview, she make a point that the Sandman was the first book that ever gave consideration to later being re-released in graphic books format, but that it was essential for the title to gain traction on a monthly basis. Getting books into distribution on a regular basis is the core business problem for any successful comic operation, and that is what this Walmart venture is all about. It is about finding a viable alternative to the Newsstand, and one that is profitable. The success of the cinima is showing that there is a huge untapped comics market for the essential product that is just not being reached.

and BTW, just because comics are periodical doesn't mean that you can't enjoy graphic book collections. Many people enjoy these formats, and in fact, if not for them being in Barnes and Noble, they might have no access. to comics at all. There are many books and works I had read in such format without which I wouldn't have had access at all to the material, especially Winsdor McCay and Frank Kings works ... not to mention Krazy Kat, and reprints of the Golden Age books.

I was half kidding because I do see your point. I am going to throw this out to you. I think you should have a regular column here because your slant on some of the comics you have talked about have been more recent OOP companies like Topps Jurassic Park and others. You also cover some of the classics in the vein of Major Hoy as well as new stuff. Just a thought. Now I'm going off the rails. Go figure.

Hah, I learned to write English from Carmen Infantano. I just have a good connection for people in Comic stores who put me onto good and different things. They know I am willing to give things a a chance. I have pet artists and writers I like, as goes anyone else. There is so much material now, and not all of it very good. The guy who should do a column is Hank Kwon, who owns Bulletproof Comics in Brooklyn. He has an encyclopedic mind about books. I am amazed that he can keep up with it all. I only read what I like.

For example, I heard many a rumors about Saga being quite good so I gave it a chance. And I can't read more than 3 issues. It is, IMO, perverse in its sex and violence and talking TV set people is just not new or interesting. Sprinkle in a plot line on psuedo-SJW mixed marriages, and you end up with, for me, a very poor read, which is immature and unimaginative. But that is my take. I will say, though, that the ramp up of overt porn these titles is getting worrisome. And it is not just comics... but the comics stuff has gotten been over the top. And that is from someone who loves Howard Chaykin, the king of comic porn. I bet he likes Saga.

I'm sure DC would be happy to, if this turns out well. However, it requires that they can solve the distribution problem (I'm assuming DC piggybacks onto Walmart's distribution system here), and from what I understand when it comes to something like this, you have Walmart and then you have everyone else. Also, the exclusivity here is good for both DC and Walmart, since Walmart gets premium and exclusive goods, and DC has some guarantee of Walmart caring about it.

If this works out well for DC, then I imagine the most likely next thing to happen is Marvel making a deal with some other huge retail giant.

Well, distribution is always the problem, right? Gas Stations would be an excellent venue... if you can reach them

DC is using a trading card distributor, from what I understand.

I think it'd be nice to see a more universal comic, to get past the hatred of Walmart that I've seen so much of (which, man, still puzzles me. I like all the Walmarts I've been to, hunting for these comics. And it's been about 7.)
