Where does Rogue One rank?

As of right now I'd say it's one of the top five in the whole series. Given time it could rank right up there with Empire.

I absolutely love Rogue One but I think it got lost in the shuffle when the rest of the new films came out. But I appreciate it so much more after all the hype for the new batch of Star Wars movies died down a bit. I still like The Force Awakens but I don’t think it has aged well as it is kind of just a retelling of A New Hope. Solo was good but not amazing. And The Last Jedi was polarizing to say the least.

Rogue One was such a well made film with truly compelling characters. I personally would put it as the third or fourth best Star War movie. Of course that’s just my opinion. I recall Kevin Smith stating it was his third favorite Star Wars movie after Empire and A New Hope.

I haven't seen episodes 7 and 8 yet. But of the Star Wars movies I've seen:

Rogue One is near the bottom of my list. However, since TLJ and Solo, it's standing has improved.

There's just too much wrong with RO for me.

The oddball character names, which nobody can remember. Or you had to watch the film multiple times to learn them all. Just the main crew, btw.


The plot/narrative: a bunch of people who have no loyalty to a common cause or each other; decide to Rogueception (Rogues within Rogues, since the Rebel Alliance didn't want to go along with Jyn's plan) together to get a thing, to do a thing... In another movie. Iron Man 2 was dragged to hell for being a glorified commercial for Avengers 1. Rogue One is a glorified commercial for ANH.


The editing. OMG! You can always tell when a director is a bad action director when they use a lot of quick cuts, scene jumps and obvious speeding up of film, in order to make the action appear faster than it's actually happening. I think it was 3-5 seconds during actions scenes before it would cut to something else. See James Bond Quantum of Solace and Moulin Rogue for similar style editing.


Over saturation of action and cartoonishly buffoonish bad guys. The Imperials suck hard at their jobs. They suck so bad that even a blind man can beat 50 shades of sh*t out of them. We all know they couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. After RO, I doubt they could hit the broad side of a barn if they were standing in it.

Rogue One is my favorite Star Wars movie.

Same. I really love the movie but the first part of it is just not wonderfully edited for being honest.

It jumps from a character to an another too fast, especially considering that at this point you don't even know them yet, and tries to get to Yavin 4 (the real start of the adventure) too quickly.

For me it's kind of in the middle. Better than the sequels and the first two prequels. So probably tied with ROTS. Out of the Disney released movies probably my second or third favorite.

Why Rogue One ranks so high:

- Best Star Wars Scene of All Time: Vader Ending
- Best Space Battle (Tied with the Battle of Endor)
- Unique Team: Everybody had a role. There wasn't a Jedi around to save the day.
