Do Luthor and the Joker help sell comics to you?

When Luthor or the Joker are in a story, are you more likely to buy the comic they're in?

Only time I bought a comic because of either of them is when The Joker had his own series in the 70's.

No. It's well expected at the end of every arc they'll get away with the crime.

I love a well written Lex Luthor and he always elevates a story when he is written well. The Joker on the other hand no. The Joker is like any other big villain in that he has been so over used the last 20 years he has lost what made him special. Lex is different because he actually has a job and a public face so seeing him around a lot makes sense. The Joker only shows up to cause chaos, and when that happens all the time it gets boring. The Joker needs a few years rest to be honest. Set him on the shelf and build up the excitement for his eventual return instead of "oh look its the Joker ...... again".

I was going to say no but, actually, while Joker isn't really a draw for me as he really only works as an agent of chaos, Lex Luthor is a fantastic character in his own right and though he does work best against Superman, he always feels like a fully drawn character himself - at least since the 1980s and Wolfman/ Byrne reimagined him.

So... yes and no?

Currently a story with Joker just makes me roll my eyes and ignore it. He may be Bat's most famous villain but I'd much rather read about anyone else but him, unless its a more classic take on the character anyway. I just haven't liked the way he's been handled in recent years plus he's overexposed in my opinion.

Ugh. I know. He'll probably be all over the damned place then. I just don't really care for "modern" Joker very much at all. Lex Luther on the other hand is much more interesting to me. I blame Smallville for that and happily too.

The only way seeing the Joker is gonna make me read a story is if it involves Hood putting him down for good.

Outside of that scenario, I'm pretty much indifferent towards him.

Luthor is interesting, but odds are I'm already reading any series he's likely to make an appearance in anyway so it's hard to tell with him.

Joker, no. I like the Joker well enough but not enough to buy a comic just because he's in it. And I've had my fill of the character in recent years anyway so the odds of me getting a comic actually drop slightly if Joker's the big bad.

Lex on the other hand? He's one of my favorite villains, and if he's showing up in a story that looks interesting, I'll be more willing to give that book a try than I would be if it were some other bad guy.

So I suppose neither of them really make much of a difference, but they do sway the scales ever so slightly. Had to vote "yes" in the poll.

Joker- maybe, because he seems to be used infrequently enough and has been written very well in recent years.

Luthor-no, because I am so so sooooooo sick of him. Luthor as a JLA member, Luthor in Action Comics, Luthor in Superman, Luthor in Superwoman (R.I.P.), Luthor in Super Sons...Meh. Not my favorite character as a hero and he's been done to death lately. Not a draw whatsoever.
