I have no problem with Carol as Captain Marvel. Rick and Carol are part of Mar-Vell's "family" so either one of them should've gotten it when he passed.

Also 'Captain' seems to common adjective for heroes and adventurers.

I'm kind of surprised we haven't seen Rick and Carol interact more to be honest.

You know, as I read the comments, I begin to think that the poll options should have been:
    • I like Carol
    • I hate how they've changed Carol
    • I liked [one of the other Captains]
    • I like a woman with the title
    • I'd rather people use the names they had when I first read about them
    • Meh, it's all good
    • Bah, the movie carves it in stone so quit wasting electrons

    True.

But the forum so far seems pretty much evenly divided on the subject. If another option was available out of the two I probably would have picked that one.

Truth to tell, I'm surprised it's at all tight. I have a minor, mainly ambivalent nostalgic preference for "Ms.", but figured it would be no contest for "Captain."

Ms. Marvel was fun. Captain Marvel - too serious.

But she's "A Captian" now*, not a mere "Ms.". She's gotta be Serious!

    * nevermind she was a Colonel once...

    I prefer Captain Marvel.

It looks like an upgrade for Carol.

I don't see why. Nobody saw her role as Ms. Marvel as something that needed to be upgraded before. But I guess turning her into a legacy character retroactively makes her previous role less important. This is something I do not agree with.

She was already a legacy character, as Ms. Marvel. She chose the name in honour of Mar-Vell. She was already his legacy. Taking the Captain Marvel mantle just puts her on the same level as Captain America. It's a name that conveys a greater sense of authority. It also reflects her own military background.

By giving her a lower rank than the one she’s actually entitled to?

If she wanted to convey a sense of authority or reflect her military background, she might want to consider “Colonel Danvers”.

Colonel Danvers isn't a codename. And Colonel Marvel isn't what's copyrighted. They could've had her as Colonel Marvel and someone else as Captain Marvel, but that would dilute the branding. So, she's Captain Marvel. Which, while not an accurate reflection of her rank, does still reflect her military background.

Oh, I fully acknowledge it’s all about the IP.

But that’s why as a code name for a pre-existing character it doesn’t work. It kind of worked for Mar-Vell, because it was supposed to be version of his actual name. It sort of worked for Monica Rambeau, because she was a new superhero.

It’s a very awkward fit for Carol Danvers. If you want to keep a name for IP retention purposes, use a new character or one that’s been actually created to bear the name so you can do it in a way which makes sense.

But hey ho I should say I disagree with the premise of the poll, in that I think both Ms Marvel and Captain Marvel are bad names for Carol Danvers, as for that matter was Binary, because Binary is a terrible superhero name and a bad name for anyone. I think we have to reconcile ourselves to the fact that Carol Danvers has never had a good superhero name.*

Then again, neither has Reed Richards.

*Edit: on reflection, tbf, Ms Marvel was probably OK in the 70s/80s, but wouldn’t work now. Warbird is merely a bit dull rather than openly terrible.

I think it puts her up there with Marvels "leaders" so to speak.

It puts her out there as one of Marvels main heroes in the public eye.
    This is just my opinion.
