    Default What blew up Krypton?

Pardon my ignorance but how many explanations are there for how Krypton blew up.

I see two current new ones running in shows and the books.

Is there an accepted one? What are all the versions of the story?

I personally like just natural causes without various villains who someone tries to stop and of course doesn't.

    1. Natural causes (though I'm not sure if that can actually happen)
    2. Mining the central core destabilizing the planet
    3. Braniac destroying it
    4. The core developing to be unstable

Brainiac is the popular choice for that in adaptions, but Earth One has an OC Tyrell responsible, and Bendis is tying his OC Rogal to Krypton’s death in canon.

Black Zero in pre crisis history was a space pirate representing a cabal of villains. Keep in mind this was 30 years into the comics. DC went back and forth on this idea, but the premise of Superman #205 at the end of the 60s was that Jor El was wrong about the internal stresses being enough to destroy the planet, and so Black Zero finished the job.

Post crisis Black Zero was a terrorist group that came about at the end of the clone wars and used nuclear weapons to destabilize the core of the planet. Took many years though.

I believe Birthright and Secret Origin, then New 52 went back to the idea of it being internal stress, but now we have the allegations of Rogol Zaar.

I liked the Krypton show's version where Brainiac taking Kandor led to the core becoming unstable.

I don't think Superman needs a primal villain who still plagues him to this day. Natural causes was fine and should be left alone.

The answer to "What blew up Krypton?" is quite obvious:
    spoilers:
    Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster
    end of spoilers

Depends on which version you look at. In terms of the current continuity, it's that Rogal Whatever guy. Or so he says. Most versions it's "natural causes", whatever that means. There are some, like the current movies and TV shows, where there are man made causes. The MOS movie basically used fracking the core as the cause. Earth One had Zod do it. Krypton uses Brainiac.

I prefer it to be be Brainiac or natural causes and Brainiac tricking everyone into thinking things are fine when Jor-El is the only one that sees a problem. Giving it to Discount Doomsday just makes me roll my eyes.

I will let Bendis play out his story, but I don't think the exact cause of its demise is as important as the idea that Jor-El was the only one who figured out that Krypton was going to explode and the vast majority of Krypton's Science Council didn't believe his warnings

The effort to give Superman a physical-threat archenemy that isn't Bizarro or Zod sometimes get tedious.

Normally, I try to keep an open mind about Krypton's destruction since it's just a small aspect in Superman's history. What matters is that Krypton blew up and Superman survived to have a full life. Krypton's destruction, in my opinion, isn't something that should be constantly modified because it doesn't need to be modified. Who cares if it was a natural disaster or an act of terrorism? Make all the explanations you want, but Superman's personality and ideals wouldn't change.
