    Default Favorite modern Superman movie

I'd like to know what is the favorite Superman movie of the modern age (2000 -> ) in this forum.

For me MAN OF STEEL is the best modern Superman movie. I think it's great overall. I appreciate the brand new origin for the character. I think the action is fantastic and I really like the story.

I also like the other movies in varying degrees. I'll expand later.

Note: I know BvS and JL are not true Superman films, but he has a sizable and relevant role in them, so I'll include them.

Hmm, since JL and BvS are not truly Superman movies, that brings it down to really being SR vs MoS. Although there were things I liked about all of them, and although I think MoS was overall the best of them in spite of some huge mistakes, the truth is that, on a purely visceral level, JL was the one I loved the most and specifically because of Superman though there were also other things. So JL.
    Power with Girl is better.

I have a problem with MoS... Why would Zod and his warriors come to earth, find out the powers the yellow sun can give to them (they should have the technology to inform them that the yellow sun gives them powers of a god and a longer life span) and not want to harness it to their advantage? why would they want to go back to being a powerless as humans by creating another Krypton?? and where do you go with a plot that Superman carries all of Kryptons genetic ancestries??
Wouldn't it have worked better if they went with the Brainiac causing the destruction of Krypton root, which would have create a bigger variations of stories to go from and could have spilled into JL?

Not really a fan of any of them, but Man of Steel wins because whatever my problems with it, it was a Superman movie.

Returns was actually more depressing than anything. Superman needs to be rescued by Lois and her new boyfriend. Heck, Richard White actually came off as more heroic than Superman. Superman has a son but the movie ends with no idea of what the relationship will be between them going forward.

BvS had my least favorite superhero trope (good guys fight) and ends with a dead Superman.

Justice League might have had a shot at edging out MOS if we didn't have that horrid Superman returns from the dead and attacks the League moment. And if it had focused more on Superman (not a complaint with the movie- just not something that keeps it from ranking higher as a Superman film).

Justice League wins by default even if it isn't really a Superman movie, because for all the genuine strengths of the others it's the only one that doesn't on a fundamental make me go "oh wow, oh jeez oh gosh oh wow, they ****ed up so bad".

I'm guessing you put the OOC way he acts immediately after being reborn as just a side-effect of resurrection or as a small enough scene that the rest of the film redeems it?

Oh yeah, it's clearly "uh oh, Superman's head isn't on straight!" and then he sees Lois and it's all okay. And what's on either side of it was consistently delightful, and even the Superman vs. League brawl itself was incredibly well-done.

MoS. I feel that some tighter editing could have made it a great film, but as it is I think it's the best of the bunch.

BvS has the best action of any of the films, but it needed a rewrite to justify where it went with the Batman/Superman relationship, and it was way to early in the franchise to have the 'death of Superman.'

Justice League is good as a popcorn movie and it's main flaw is how bad Steppenwolf is, but the heroes are all likeable.

Returns is a snoozefest through and through and I hate with a passion Superman as a deadbeat dad, so it's the bottom of the barrel for me.

For me it's MOS. Yes the last 30 minutes go a bit too far into destruction porn and really needed another scene or two in there, but its a decent origin story and has really great performances.

BvS ultimate cut I would rate as a better movie overall than MOS in terms of ambition and scope and Supes is an important part of it, but it isn't a true Superman movie. It's more a movie about the worlds reaction to Superman than about Superman himself and thus It's Justice League: the Pilot. The theatrical cut however is...not very good by any measure, especially for Superman.

The resurrection scene in JL and his showing against Steppenwolf is impressive and that films highlight but ultimately it's a glorified cameo. Plus the whole CGI moustache thing rubs me wrong even now.

RETURNS has to be the biggest disappointment. They get a lot right and its got its heart in the right place with a gorgeous look and a mostly great cast...but theres just so much wrong. Aside from the whole sorta dead beat dad overtone, the costume is probably the weakest live action suit on film and when there is no chemistry between your Lois Lane and your Superman , you got big problems. Brandon himself was good but Kate was horribly miscast. It's basically the most expensive Superman fan film ever made.

When it comes to comics, one person's "fan-service" is another persons personal cannon. So by definition it's ALL fan service. Aren't we ALL fans?
SUPERMAN is the greatest fictional character ever created.

    Man of Steel

Not a fan of any of the others. Superman is a non-character in BvS. SR didn't feel like Superman in the slightest. JL was an incomplete mess.

Man of Steel is a good flick.

Sadly, they're all train wrecks of varying degrees. SR, MoS and JL each have good points. SR has a lot of heart, MoS has the better plot, and JL (in spite of the CGI mouth) has the better Superman.

As an overall movie, though-- I'd go for SR. Its warm-- if bittersweet-- tone, its design, the direction and music all somehow make up for the lacking plot to me.

Batman vs Superman by a wide margin for me. It's the only one I'd actually consider to be a good film.

Superman Returns was okay, but it was too slavish to Donner's films, Lois was miscast and Real Estate Luthor is the worst version of Lex Luthor ever (despite having been played by two great actors).

Man of Steel was just really really boring. The worst sin in a superhero film.

JLA was a mess. I managed to enjoy it, but I spent most of the film wondering why the hell Henry Caville looked so grotesque - and then found out later about the 'tache.

Man of Steel felt like it was a great starting point for a new franchise, with the more movies released the closer it got to the classic Supes people know & love but it just didn't seem to happen like that.

I found it to be the opposite, it opens with a dragon space fight and ends with half the city being destroyed. The movie was a great reply to the complaint about Returns, it just lack some of the charm from it tho.

It's not even close for me, SUPERMAN RETURNS is the only movie that has a Superman that I like and recognize as the Superman I want to see. I'm not saying that the Snyder work is bad--in some ways, from a cinematic perspective, it's better--it's just not Superman for me. You know, Marvel could do a great movie, but I would still prefer to see a DC movie, because I like DC over Marvel. It's the same with Cavill vs Routh--Routh embodies all the things that are Superman to me, where Cavill hasn't yet (although JUSTICE LEAGUE made an attempt).
