Disney should swallow their pride and rehire James Gunn.
(They won't.)
Except we've been shown time and time again that rebooting superhero properties does not lead to declining profits. Spiderman Homecoming made less than every Sam Raimi film, Batman 1989 made less, even without accounting for inflation, and the original Superman film made more than MoS accounting for inflation. Eventually if the reboot is endearing enough you will produce a sequel that exceeded the Box Office of the original film, but that takes years of investment.

I don't mean to sound cynical but does this seem to anyone else like Disney is punishing the cast and crew for speaking out in defense of James and not towing the company line?

Guardians was a heavy investment by Disney. They are one of the premier Marvel brands they promote, they rebranded one of their most popular rides (Tower of Terror) in California to a Guardians themed ride, they sell lots of merch off this. Disney isn't stupid, they don't like what's happening and want to cool things off.
Yeah it's really better to just put things on hold and let it cool down and regroup to find a new strategy. But yeah Disney had two options, neither looked good, but I feel like if they just kept Gunn the story would have died in a few months and it would have been a thing that maybe some people brought up about Gunn being kinda creepy. The action they did take created a massive response they probably didn't expect and it divided the fanbase and people involved.
And it's kind of funny that some of the people here who initially said that Disney did the right thing and that this wouldn't matter too much are now saying that it's okay cause Guardians wasn't that important anyways. Which just kind of confirms a few things too me
I'd like to point out that Edgar Wright and Marvel split ways on Ant-Man officially on May 23rd, 2014. Peyton Reed was officially announced as Ant-Man's director on June 7th, 2014.
But they can't have found a director for Guardians 3 in all this time?
