GotG 3 not even happening at this point might be for the best. But it also shows how incredibly stupid Disney was.
Great job, Disney.
GotG 3 not happening isn't an option for Marvel as reportedly the script that Gunn handed in is meant to setup the direction the MCU goes post Avengers 4.
Disney might be thinking they don’t need hassle that GOTG 3 will bring.
With F4 and XCU under their belt, they don’t really need another GOTG movie
That's not official. But it seems to be a feeling people are more openly expressing online due to the circumstances surrounding Guardians 3's problems. The cast is unhappy. Whatever director that agrees to take the job will essentially be seen as a scab. And the project itself is still reportedly using Gunn's script (and changing it will just lead to Bautista straight up walking away. And it wouldn't surprise me if others joined him in walking away).
Disney has really screwed this one up. Badly.
Gunn asked to use Nova (Richard) in the past.
They could easily transition to Nova, setting him up during GotG v3 and scatter the Guardians.
Or switch them into their OG setup.
I doubt they will tank one of their best franchises over one director.

Given the circumstances behind Gunn's firing, getting another big deal director is sure to be all but impossible. Whoever signs up to direct Guardians 3 is either going to be seen as a scab, or it will be made clear they're essentially shadow directing for Gunn (and they will still get a lot of hate anyway even if that is the case). And they can't change Gunn's script. Bautista has already threatened to walk if that happens (and I wouldn't be surprised if others joined him).
Sure, the movie might still happen, but it wouldn't be all that surprising if it didn't. Disney screwed this movie. Alan Horn screwed this movie.
No, Gunn screwed this movie
IF the movie isn't made, then YES the movie was screwed. Or if it's made but it's not a critical/commercial success.
HOWEVER, if the movie is made and it does fine, then by the same token what happened in the grand scheme of things won't have mattered much at all. We'll have to wait and see.
The movie is screwed in a sense that Disney hasn't given Marvel a lot of time to find a new director. Filming is set to begin at the end of the year and it's scheduled to be released in 2020. I don't see many directors wanting to sign up to direct a movie that's this much of a shitshow.
