I don't think there's any doubt that Guardians wasn't a successful franchise.

But realistically at this point they could plug in any marvel super hero movie and still make millions. They have at least half a dozen movies on deck, and with the X-Men and FF IPs they potentially have dozens more.

Point being at this point Disney probably doesn't care that much if they don't make Guardians 3. Not that it wasn't incredibly profitable... but they have so much going for them at this point that they can eat whatever difference good or made a different movie might make without even batting an eye. With the momentum of success and money they are making at this point they simply can't lose regardless of what movie they put out.... to them firing Gunn and not making Guardians 3 simply doesn't matter.
