Some people really went in on "Gunn is so toxic that Disney had no choice but to fire him" and now that we see that is not the case, they are still trying to save face.

Yeah, I do think at least from a narrative stand point most if not all the Guardians plot points were checked off. We found out Starlords dad. Gamora, Nebula, and Drax all got to fight Thanos.
Really, I think the next movie was just to build up for whatever other cosmic stuff Gunn might have had in mind. He introduced the Original Guardians, and teased Adam Warlock. I wonder if the next movie wasn't essentially a transition into the other cosmic stuff Gunn had planned. Had being the operative word at this point.
